  • On the article New Study Claims Chain Store Wine and Beer Sales Would Increase Revenue

The local merchant issue is a tough one. There are some stores with helpful employees, good selection, etc., but try going to a lot of other stores. Try Snowden River Liquors, or the stores in Harper's Choice, Owen Brown, and numerous other village centers. These owner and clerks wouldn't know a decent wine if their lives depended on it, and the beer selection is mostly limited to the major brewers and their various subsidiaries.

There are people who run liquor stores well, but that's far from standard. Letting them have a monopoly on the product just for protectionism's sake is a disservice to all of us.

Let's just split the difference. Don't allow hard liquor sales in grocery stores, gas stations, etc., but do allow beer and wine, or at least just beer.

Strange that McLeod is listed as being from Columbia. His five prior (unsealed) court cases indicate his address as being in the 7000 block of Stallings Dr in Glen Burnie, not anywhere near Columbia. His father must be Ronald Lee McLeod, Sr., who does have an address on Gray Sea Dr in Columbia, but he seems to be a truck driver, based on his traffic citation for driving an over-weight tandem vehicle in Frederick County. It's possible junior changed addresses to his father's house in Columbia, but it's a trucker is usually gone a bit much to really be able to keep track of a kid, especially when that kid has an history of disregarding suspensions and probation on his learner's permit and license. Note that McLeod just turned 18 a month ago, so any criminal cases in which he might have been involved in the past would almost certainly be sealed.

Court records for Ronald Lee McLeod, Jr. (all those w/ birth year 1994): http://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/inquiry-results.jsp?action=Search&d-16544-s=7&filingDate=&filingStart=&courtSystem=B&firstName=RONALD&filingEnd=&d-16544-o=1&lastName=MCLEOD&company=N&site=00&partyType=&d-16544-p=1&countyName=&middleName=L

Savage's address is in Glen Burnie. He has a criminal record a mile long, including armed robbery, 1st and 2nd degree assault, credit card theft, multiple carjackings, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property, and more. And that's just what has happened since he turned 18 less than a year ago.

That's a laughable argument, seriously. Who said anything about allowing people to consume alcohol on the premises?

I can think of a number of reasons why attendance at Splashdown/Swim Center might be pretty low. One is that it was closed down long enough that a lot of people just got out of the mindset of going there, and that effect may gradually subside. Another is that WLVC is still a ghost town, although there's a plan in progress to change that.

I'll describe some family-related reasons why I don't go very often:

    1. KidSpace time is next to nothing. It's 9am-noon M-F, and no weekend hours. That means it's basically only available for stay-at-home parents.

    2. The kid pool is just a rectangle of plain, and doesn't really encourage interaction between kids. No toys, mushroom waterfalls, slide, or even a seesaw like Supreme Sports. I have one 3YO and one 7YO, and since there's no KidSpace for my 3YO, my 7YO has to stay with us in the kid pool, bored to death. Heck, even the 3YO sometimes gets bored, because there aren't any real amenities. I think a lot of parents with multiple kids probably experience the same thing. At least the Columbia Gym has a beach entry, so both kids can enjoy the pool.

    3. There's only one family changing room, which makes it extremely inconvenient for parents with small children. By contrast, there are three family changing rooms at the Columbia Gym. One family can take 20min. to change sometimes, and there's often a line, so it takes forever to take a child of the opposite sex to the bathroom, change clothes, etc. It's simply impractical.

Sounds like a great use of the space. I really have no respect for the A/B board at this point, and am resolutely sticking with my plan to boycott Perfect Pour, Kings Contrivance, and the other cronies involved in the vote, but I'm looking forward to seeing the classes at some point.

Get real. HCPD sets up those operations, but can also do things like this. I don't think they're perfect by any stretch, but would you trade their level of efficacy for that of AA, PG, BC, or the city's police dept?

I don't know for certain, but I would think the shop probably required ID as part of the transaction. They might disburse payment in the form of a check, which of course would require a real name.

Andrew: thanks so much to you and anyone else involved with Patch and getting the word out about these two. I don't doubt that getting the word out helped prevent further crimes.

Police: great cooperative work to track down these two. I remember reading the story and thinking how hilarious it'd be if these two actually showed up to the Ravens game and sat in the seats. I'm so glad they were caught.

I think there's a case to be made for giving people a chance to correct course after a mistake or two, but this is yet another example of a person who has been given chance after chance, and just keeps on hurting others. We've all heard ridiculous accounts of misapplication of three-strikes laws in some states, but sound policy would find a way to put guys like this away for good.

As for the accomplice, I haven't looked up her record, but I'd be shocked if she weren't a repeat offender as well. Such a small bail amount doesn't make sense for her, let alone for him.

Michele, are you saying that he is the father of your daughter? I know many people who have problems with the other parent of their children, but that would be extremely chilling. I'm sorry if that's the case, and you have to deal with that.

  • On the article POLL: Is Wegmans Hurting Village Centers?

If I had a decent village center store nearby, I'd shop there more than I do, but I'm stuck with the Harper's Choice Safeway. I have literally never been in such a poorly-managed store as this one. I could write volumes about what's wrong with it, including broken self-checkouts, 30-45min lines, broken carts, and just plain depressing lighting. I avoid it whenever possible, which means Trader Joe's, Costco, Wegmans, or even another village center's supermarket.
