A Columbia man was sentenced at Howard County Circuit Court Friday to 18 months in jail for his involvement in a collision that resulted in the death of a Marriotts Ridge High School educator in 2012. Richie Junior Burgess, 42, of the 1200 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, pleaded guilty two months ago to manslaughter. Police said Burgess' blood tested positive for the prescription medication Xanax at the time of the crash. The accident, which happened on Feb. 21, 2012; on eastbound MD Route 32 at the Route 29 interchange, critically injured Mary Ann Levant, 64, a long-time staff member of the Howard County Public School System. A snow plow turned over on Route 29 at Route 100, according to the Howard County Police. The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. Thursday on the southbound side of the roadway, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. No injuries were reported and there were no other vehicles involved, according to police. The south off-ramp from Route 29 is currently closed, according to the SHA's interactive CHART map. Howard County Police said Friday they would increase patrols on the Route 29 footbridge in Town Center after two robberies were reported in less than a month on the bridge. A man was reportedly robbed while walking across the Route 29 footbridge around 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 by two suspects who asked the man for a cigarette, then stole his iPhone and wallet, according to police. Police reported there was no indication the suspects were armed. The alleged robbery happened less than a month after a woman reported her iPhone was stolen by three suspects on the footbridge around 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 20. Columbia Robbery For the second time in a month, a robbery has been reported on the footbridge over Route 29. Police say the victim was walking on the lakefront side when two people approached him, asking for a cigarette. Then, according to police, they stole the victim’s iPhone and wallet. They did not display or imply weapons. Columbia: Howard County Police are looking for three suspects in connection with a robbery on the Route 29 footbridge who may also have been involved with an attempted break-in on Swift Stream Place. Just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, police were called to the 10300 block of Swift Stream Place for reports of men turning doorknobs along the hallway. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman proposed $600,000 for a bridge across Route 29 connecting downtown Columbia to Oakland Mills as part of his $175.3 million capital budget proposal for fiscal year 2013. The proposal came after residents lobbied for $200,000 to $300,000 for a feasibility study to build the bridge last month. Bridge Columbia, a residents’ activist group, set up a website last year to promote building a new bridge over Route 29 that would be more aesthetically pleasing and allow for bus travel over the bridge.
