Super Bowl XLVII pits the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh against the Ravens' John Harbaugh. Patch shares the story of the Harbaugh family leading into Super Bowl Sunday.
Jack Harbaugh coached for decades. He was the head coach for 55 games. He's seen a lot of football. But only once before has the father of three watched as his two sons coached against one another in the NFL. And after three-or-so agonizing hours on Thanksgiving Day 2011, Harbaugh visited the bowels of M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, peered into the Ravens locker room to see his jubilant son, John. Then he took an immediate detour to the visiting locker room to find his son, Jim. That's where he belonged. "It was quiet and somber, and finally I saw Jim, all by himself, no one around him. He still had his coaching things on, and his hands on his head, and we realized that that is where we were needed," Jack Harbaugh said. "So that feel of …

Super Bowl XLVII pits the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh against the Ravens' John Harbaugh. Patch shares the story of the Harbaugh family leading into Super Bowl Sunday.
She'll be a proud mom on Sunday. She already is. But if history serves as a precursor, she'll also be intensely nervous. Jackie Harbaugh has been here once before—watching sons Jim and John square off as NFL coaches in a Thanksgiving Day game in 2011. Jackie and her husband, Jack, watched the game from a television, out of the view of network television cameras, while their sons coached before a national audience. "I’ve never seen Jackie experience that in a ballgame. I mean she was nearly comatose," Jack said in a nationwide media conference call recently. "She just starred at the screen, there was no facial emotion whatsoever, just a blank stare into the screen, not a word was spoken and at the end of the game, it was just over." John's …

Finding time with dad can be a challenge when your father is a college football coach. It can be especially challenging if you're the lone daughter amongst three siblings. For Joani Harbaugh, spending time with her father, Jack Harbaugh, meant tagging along to practices. "Well, it was your life. I didn’t know I was in a coaching environment, I just felt that was how we lived, that’s what my dad did for a living," she said on a national media conference call last week. "Luckily, I think as parents, they involved their kids in their professional life. So if dad had practice, mom took us out to practice; that’s how we saw dad in the afternoon. Or we sat down at the kitchen table and I’d color his scouting reports because he was working, so …

Super Bowl XLVII pits the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh against the Ravens' John Harbaugh. Patch shares the story of the Harbaugh family leading into Super Bowl Sunday.
They'll take an objective approach Sunday. Jackie Harbaugh and her daughter, Joani, vow to wear neutral clothes. Jack Harbaugh said he'll take off his coach's hat and just play the role of Dad. When it comes to Super Bowl coaches John and Jim Harbaugh, their family doesn't play favorites. But that didn't stop John from interrupting a nationwide media conference call last week to double-check. "Is it true that both of you like Jim better than John?," asked a Baltimore caller named John. Joani knew immediately that the voice on the other end was her brother. But there was a dramatic pause from Momma Harbaugh. "Is that John?," Jackie finally asked. "Is that John Harbaugh?" Dad followed up, amid laughter. "Mom was ready to come right through …

Super Bowl XLVII pits the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh against the Ravens' John Harbaugh. Patch shares the story of the Harbaugh family leading into Super Bowl Sunday.
It has been called the Harbaugh Bowl—or the HarBowl for short. But the Harbaugh family—whose sons, Jim and John, will be coaching the teams playing for the NFL crown—has its own thoughts on what Super Bowl XLVII should be called. Jackie Harbaugh, mother of Jim and John, was the first to chime in on a national media conference call last week. “I prefer it to be called the Super Bowl," she said, matter-of-factly. Jack Harbaugh, the patriarch and former college football coach, was rather no-nonsense in his opinion, too. "For us, for me, it’s the Lombardi Trophy, because I go back to the beginning," Jack Harbaugh said. "I can remember the beginning of this great, great classic originated with Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers winning …
