Five things to Know in Columbia, 10/31

I enjoyed yesterday's comeback win by the Ravens, even if I listened on a radio, huddled under a blanket, waiting for the power to be restored.

What Could a New Downtown Columbia Look Like? We're Starting to Find Out

Residents are concerned about rental properties, density and traffic.

With only design guidelines to look at and actual site plans not yet on the horizon, residents got a glimpse into what a future Columbia Town Center will look like, and they had a lot to say about it. Some were excited about the possibilities while others were concerned about the potentially large number of rental properties and what new construction will do to the character of existing neighborhoods. Representatives of the Howard Hughes Corp. Thursday night unveiled land-use and design guidelines for new residential and retail development on 12 acres of land around The Mall in Columbia. No more apartments needed in Columbia ! Don't believe the nonsense about high end rentals. We must make certain that any residential development is owner occupied housing ----- housing that pays it own way. Columbia Association and Howard County Council members need to stand tall against rental apartments.   more ›

Downtown Development Meeting Scheduled Thursday in Columbia

Howard Hughes Corp. officials will share plans, answer questions and accept comments.

Columbia residents will have their first chance tonight to see details of the downtown development plan as envisioned by the Howard Hughes Corp. Hughes representatives will host a pre-submission community meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Howard Community College, at which they will share concept plans for the development proposed for land known as parcels C and D, adjacent to The Mall in Columbia. The company envisions more than 800 residential units and 70,000 square feet of retail space in the land. Also included in the presentation will be details about the road network, as well as the final development plan for the Warfield neighborhood.
