Storm Damage: Flooding, Road Closures and Downed Trees

Heavy rainfall overnight on Wednesday soaked Howard County.

A rain storm that poured down on the county overnight on Wednesday caused flooding, road closures and downed trees. The storm swept through Maryland leaving approximately two inches of rainfall in an 18-hour period, according to National Weather Service (NWS) data. On Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, the Patapsco River rose so high it nearly reached the bridge that leads into Catonsville. Officials closed Main Street in the morning due to flooding and some businesses were dealing with the after-effects. Phoenix Emporium, Great Panes and Discoveries were just some of the Main Street businesses that said they experienced flooding due to the storm. “You get used to it,” said Len Berkowitz, owner of Great Panes, who was cleaning up …

While residents and officials continue to clean up after a superstorm hit the East Coast, we take a look at the most dramatic images from the superstorm.

It's been a long couple of days for residents along the East Coast of the United States. First, they prepared for Hurricane Sandy's arrival, amid claims it was the "perfect storm"—filling sandbags, boarding up buildings and buying supplies over the weekend. On Monday, as Sandy approached the Northeast, the winds picked up and officials began evacuations and last-minute preparations, while businesses closed early to avoid the brunt of the superstorm. Dogs 'Just Fabulous' After Getting Power Back

An employee at Preston Country Club for Pets in Columbia said the power was restored to the pet care facility at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

  An employee at Preston Country Club for Pets said Friday its power was restored at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, four days after it was knocked out in the devastating derecho storm that struck Maryland on June 29. The employee said the approximately 200 dogs being cared for at the facility are "just fabulous." About 15 employees and 200 dogs had suffered through the high temperatures the previous weekend without power and telephone service. Because their phones were knocked out, they said they were unable to notify owners, many of whom were on vacation, of the situation.
