CBS Baltimore interviewed Wael Ali for a story that aired Monday night.
Wael Ali said he could imagine what it was like for his parents coping with his twin brother's death almost five years ago, during an interview with WJZ that aired on Monday. But he said he couldn't imagine what it was like for them as they faced the possibility that he might be found guilty of his brother's murder. It was the first interview Ali granted since a jury failed to reach a verdict in April in his homicide trial for the death of his brother, Wasel Ali. The judge in the case declared a mistrial, prosecutors said they would not re-try Ali, and he was released from Howard County Jail. Wasel Ali's body was found off a secluded Columbia pathway behind the Merion apartment building in August 2007. The medical examiner said Wasel died …

The jury could not reach a verdict in the case of Wael Ali, accused in the killing of his twin brother, Wasel.
Judge Richard Bernhardt Thursday declared a mistrial in the murder trial of Wael Ali, 23, accused of killing his twin brother, Wasel, whose decomposing body was found in August 2007 on a secluded pathway behind Green Meadow Drive in Columbia. A medical examiner said Wasel died of asphyxiation. The jury passed a note to the judge around 5:40 p.m. after deliberating for 20 hours. The note said that jurors had reviewed and discussed all the evidence in the case and had not reached a verdict. "The jury is deadlocked," the note said. Before declaring the mistrial, Bernhardt said, "There is no indication to me that they have done anything but work very hard. Asking them to continue will not change the result." Ali's family reacted with tears. …

The first witnesses testified in the Wael Ali murder case at Howard County Circuit Court in Ellicott City.
In the opening statements of the State vs. Wael Ali, prosecutors said Wael Ali’s own words would be used against him in his trial on charges he killed his twin brother, Wasel. The defense asked jurors not to get caught up in theories and to demand hard evidence. The state’s case rests on the theory that Wael Ali, 23, took his twin brother to a secluded path in Columbia sometime after 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 22, 2007 after the brothers were last seen parting ways at Columbia mall. Wael was seen on a surveillance video driving off by himself. During that time, said prosecutor Doug Nelsen, Wael had enough time to strangle his twin brother before he called friends around 7:15 p.m. and told them Wasel was missing. Nelsen said the twins had learned …

Wasel Ali died of a neck injury in Columbia, according to investigators. Wayne Kirwin, spokesman for Howard County Circuit Court, said that opening statements in the trial will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. On Monday, Judge Richard S. Bernhardt asked potential jurors a series of questions. He asked if any of them would have a problem with the defendant’s Middle Eastern ethnicity or Islamic faith. None did. He asked if any of them knew about the case before entering the room. None admitted to any knowledge. He asked them if they would be OK viewing graphic images. No one had a problem. It was announced that Ali was competent to stand trial during motions on Monday after he was cleared by a psychiatrist in February.
Wael Ali, the Columbia man charged with murdering his twin brother, Wasel, is competent to stand trial next week, according to motions today at Howard County Circuit Court in Ellicott City. After a question from a lawyer from the state’s attorney’s office, Ali’s defense attorney confirmed that Ali is competent to stand trial, but asked that he be allowed to see a psychiatrist during the trial to help cope with stress. “As long as he’s in the mental health the psychiatrist says he is,” said Ali’s defense attorney, “he’ll be ready to go a week from today.” Judge Richard S. Bernhardt agreed to allow the psychiatrist to see Ali during the trial. In February, Ali was evaluated by a psychiatrist after a motions hearing in the case was postponed…

Wael Ali, charged in the killing of his twin brother Wasel in Columbia in 2007, will continue to be held without bail despite no recent transgressions.
Wael Ali, accused of killing his twin brother Wasel in 2007, will continue to be held without bail pending further review, the District Court of Howard County ruled today. Assistant State’s Attorney James Dietrich argued that the charges were serious enough to warrant being held without bail, especially since Ali had been previously put on probation for possession of a concealed deadly weapon. Dietrich also confirmed that Wasel’s death was a homicide and that the cause was strangulation by asphyxiation. Ali’s attorney, Joseph LaMore, argued that Ali had not tried to flee since 2007 when the killing occurred. Ali went to live in Georgia with his mother in 2009 and after a failed business venture attended college there, and has since …

Details from the statement of charges released by investigators reveal evidence indicating a violent relationship between twin brothers Wasel and Wael Ali. Wael is accused in Wasel's 2007 killing.
New details from the statement of charges released by investigators reveal a tumultuous relationship between twin brothers Wasel and Wael Ali. Wael is accused in the death of Wasel in 2007. According to charging documents, friends told officials arguments between the two would result in physical violence, including choking. The fights allegedly stemmed from conflicts over multiple run-ins with the law. The charges indicate that the brothers enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2007 and went absent without leave after boot camp, stealing a U.S. government vehicle, which they then used to impersonate police and to conduct traffic stops. Both brothers were arrested and received probation in July 2007 after their home was searched and investigators …
