The redevelopment of Columbia's first village center is expected to complete construction in about two years, said officials Wednesday.
Officials gathered Wednesday to break ground at the Wilde Lake Village Center, a $17 million redevelopment project that will bring new retail space, offices and apartments to the property that was built in 1967. "This is a marathon and we're in the final stretch," said Geoff Glazer, vice president of Kimco Realty, the development company handling the construction. At the event on Wednesday, Kimco staff, local residents, and public officials mingled under an event tent. Glazer spoke about the delays in beginning development due to a vocal Wilde Lake community that criticized the company's plans throughout the process. "This is not a shy village," said Glazer. "They have an opinion and they will share it with you." Plans to develop the …

Defense says shooting of Bryan Adams is not first-degree murder during retrial of Antajuan Lawntee Wilson.
During opening statements of the retrial of a Columbia man convicted of first-degree murder in 2008, it was announced by the prosecution that the murder weapon had been found during the dredging of Lake Kittamaqundi. The weapon was not present in the original 2008 trial of Antajuan Lawntee Wilson, 23, whose retrial is underway at Howard County Circuit Court. Wilson had been convicted of killing Bryan Antoine Adams Jr. outside the Wilde Lake Village Center. During opening statements Tuesday, Assistant State's Attorney Doug Nelsen said workers dredging the north end of Lake Kittamaqundi found a handgun. The dredging operation took place in 2010 and 2011. Nelsen said officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms later matched …

Antajuan Wilson was convicted of the murder of a Columbia man in 2008, but a higher court ordered a retrial after an error.
A Columbia man convicted of a 2008 Wilde Lake murder will be retried beginning this week. Antajuan Lawntee Wilson, 23, of Columbia, was convicted of the first-degree murder of Bryan Antoine Adams Jr., 20, who was shot to death outside the Wilde Lake Village Center in April of 2008. However, the conviction was overturned after Maryland's highest appellate court ruled the jury instruction in the trial was insufficient, according to Explore Howard. The court ruled the jury was not instructed to take into account that Wilson may have been in a "kill-or-be-killed situation" and could have been acting in "imperfect self-defense", which is grounds for a reduced sentence, according to the report. Wilson has been held in prison since his 2008 …

The company is looking at possibly acquiring the KFC building, which was abandoned in late April and its future is uncertain.
Kimco Realty is interested in acquiring the currently abandoned KFC building in Wilde Lake and on Wednesday received approval for its development plan for the Wilde Lake Village Center. Geoff Glazer, Kimco’s vice president of development and acquisition for the Mid-Atlantic region, confirmed on Friday that Kimco is interested in purchasing the old KFC building at 5400 Lynx Lane. The building was shuttered by KFC in late April. “We’re looking at acquiring it,” Glazer said on Friday. “We’re trying to get control, but there’s a process.” In April, Patch readers said they’d be interested in a fast-food restaurant, such as Sonic, for the space. Tell us: What do you think Kimco should do with the old KFC, if it acquires it? Glazer said Kimco …

agree - the fear was/is that "big corporation" does not care about the original concept of Columbia - your local village center should have a drug store, grocery store, a bank, an eatery, and a few other retailers so that you do not have to have a car to get what you need. I came to Columbia and raised my children here because of Mr. Rouse's vision. Big business and too many apartments and other …   more ›
