A befuddling fratricide trial in Columbia makes headlines.
More than nine months after a mistrial was declared in the murder trial of Wael Ali—who was accused of killing his twin brother Wasel on a Columbia pathway in 2007—a Washington Post writer looked into the twins' life and Ali's muder trial. It was a befuddling case. There was no physical evidence linking Wael to the crime, nor witnesses, only the prosecutors' unsuccessful attempts to use circumstantial evidence to prove that Wael was angry and violent enough to strangle his identical twin to death on a secluded pathway behind the Merion apartment building in Columbia. "If fratricide is unusual, fratricide among twins is almost unheard of. Dominique Bourget, a Canadian forensic psychiatrist and expert on fratricide, can recall studying …

Exclusive video: Wael Ali reunites with family after spending six months in jail, charged with killing his twin brother.
Wael Ali greets friends and family members outside Howard County Detention Center. Earlier on Monday charges against Ali for the murder of his identical twin brother, Wasel, were dropped by prosecutors from the Maryland State's Attorney's office. Ali was arrested in Cobb County, GA, in September of 2011 after a cold case investigation led authorities to investigate him as the killer of his twin brother, who was found dead on a Columbia pathway in August of 2007. But on March 29, his trial in Howard County, MD, Circuit Court ended in a mistrial. In 2007, the twins lived on the East side of Columbia with their parents. The twins were born in Sudan, but moved to the United States with their family in 1994. Throughout the trial, Ali's father …

Wael Ali’s family and friends cried as he walked out of Howard County Detention Center Monday, declaring he would start a new life. Outside the jail, he and his mother held a long embrace. He leaned his head against her shoulder and they both cried. “This is a victory for my family,” said Ali. “This is the start of a new life for me.” Ali had been held in jail since being charged with the murder of his identical twin brother, Wasel Ali, in September 2011. Wasel was found dead on a secluded Columbia pathway in August of 2007. On Monday afternoon, prosecutors dropped the charges against Ali at a status conference after a hung jury resulted in a mistrial on March 29. Ali’s defense attorney, Jason Shapiro, confirmed the jury voted 11-1 in …

Wael Ali will have to wait another 11 days to find out whether he will be put on trial again for his brother's murder.
A status conference hearing for Wael Ali, a 24-year-old Columbia resident accused of killing his twin brother in 2007, was postponed Thursday morning at Howard County Circuit Court. Ali was set to appear before Judge Richard Bernhardt at 8:30 a.m., but the hearing was postponed until April 16, according to Ali’s defense attorney Jason Shapiro. “I’m hopeful the case will come to a close on April 16,” said Shapiro. “We’ve made some real headway into resolving the case.” One week ago, a mistrial was declared in Ali’s one-and-a-half week murder trial after the jury could not come to a decision in the case. A verdict may come soon.
Closing arguments in the Wael Ali twin murder trial began Tuesday morning in Howard County Circuit Court. The prosecution rested its case in the afternoon on Friday after calling a number of witnesses, including the investigative officers, a number of the twins’ friends, the medical examiner and the man who found Wasel Ali’s decomposing body off a Columbia pathway in August of 2007, according to Wayne Kirwan, spokesman for the state's attorney's office. The prosecution relied on witness testimony and a timeline of the day on which Wasel is believed to have been killed. The state’s case rests on the theory that Wael Ali, 23, took his twin brother to a secluded path in Columbia sometime after 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 22, 2007 after the brothers …
