Coale Raises $2,500 in Three Days for Homeless

Local blogger Tom Coale enlists the community to help fight homelessness in Howard County.

Local blogger and Columbia Association board member Tom Coale turned his local audience into activists this week and raised $2,500 to help fight homelessness in Howard County. On Monday, Coale kicked off his efforts by posting on his blog, HoCo Rising, a story about how in 2011 he and his readers raised $3,025, which was donated to Grassroots Crisis Prevention Center. The center used the funds to provide a security deposit for a sober house in Howard County. Currently, that house houses four men who are no longer homeless, according to Coale. So Coale let his readers know that a new group called Living in Recovery needs $2,300 by the end of July to open a second sober house. By Tuesday, Coale had already raised $260 from local readers …

Will You Camp Out For Wegmans?

In the past, openings have reportedly included "lounge chairs, sleeping bags and pup tents."

Should Howard County decline to participate in the heydey that has characterized previous Wegmans store openings out of self respect? Blogger and Columbia Association Board Member Tom Coale raised the issue in his blog in response to reports from Explore Howard that said Wegmans officials expect thousands to congregate before the store's 7 a.m. Sunday (June 17) opening in Columbia at 8855 McGaw Road. In the past, openings have included "lounge chairs, sleeping bags and pup tents," the paper reported. Tell us in comments: Will you be lugging lounge chairs to be among the first the see the new Columbia Wegmans? Or do you think that is an unnecessary display? Coale's response? "I truly hope that my fellow HoCo'ers have the dignity and self-…

Frankly I'm just to old to be camping out for anything, much less a grocery store opening. But, I am ready to check out Wegman's. I've already got my card, some coupons and an app for the Ipad. I was able to check some prices on things I get regularly and was pleasantly surprised how low they were. E.g., 1 gallon 1% mllk $2.69, most places it's about $4.00, my Arizona Blueberry tea is at a great …   more ›

School Board Challengers Snag Education Association Endorsement

The endorsements show the educators association's frustration with the current make up of the board.

The Howard County Education Association, which represents more than 5,000 teachers and school staff in the county, has endorsed three non-incumbents—Ann DeLacy, David Gertler and Jackie Scott for the county board of education. “We need change on the Board of Education,” said HCEA President Paul Lemle in an interview. “These are by far the most educated, best prepared, ready-to-serve candidates.” In a statement released by the HCEA, Lemle said, “The current members hold each other in contempt. This dichotomy is an inherent contradiction; the two states cannot coexist.” The association, which is the exclusive representative of teachers in Howard County for collective bargaining, endorsed incumbents Janet Siddiqui, Ellen Flynn Giles and Allen…

Having your child beaten by a teacher or strip searched to speak of but a few incidents would leave most parents with a bad taste. To have the hcpss tell you corporal punishment is legal may disturb a parent. To look beyond what has happened to my children and see children discriminated against and failed, other children abused, entire schools like Cradlerock abandoned for a generation and so …   more ›

Seven Questions with HoCo Rising’s Tom Coale

Are bloggers egomaniacs? Local blogger Tom Coale weighs in.

Patch sat down Monday at Eggspectation in Ellicott City with Tom Coale, 29, one of Howard County’s most prominent bloggers and a new member of the Columbia Association Board. Readership has been steadily increasing at his website, HoCo Rising, with about 7,000 to 9,000 hits a month this summer, he said. By day, Coale, a Dorsey's Search resident, is a lawyer working in Baltimore doing security clearance and medical malpractice law. Patch: You’ve done HoCo Rising for two years. Why did you start it? Tom Coale: I guess I was trying to get myself in trouble. [The real reason]: I wanted to make local news interesting. I thought local news, being zoning and taxes and all that stuff, was very bland and not that accessible to someone my age. How …
