Howard County police increased patrols over St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
Howard County announced Monday that they arrested 21 people for driving under the influence during increased patrols over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. “Thankfully, we'll never know if one of those drivers might have injured himself or someone else, or worse,” officials wrote on the Howard County Police Department Facebook Page. Carroll County officials were also among the law enforcement agencies watching out for drivers under the influence over the holiday, officials reported Monday. Two drivers were arrested in Carroll County during a weekend sobriety checkpoint, law enforcement officials said. Now we're not going to tell you how to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, because that's up to your own interpretation. But we've compiled a list of places to celebrate the holiday. Second Chance Saloon The Saloon in Oakland Mills is kicking off the celebration at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 17. The bar is offering $2.50 green National Bohemians all day, as well as $4 Irish Coffees and $5 Jameson shots. Bruce Casteel will play live from 3 to 6 p.m. and Idle Wild from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Symphonic Pops Columbia Orchestra’s Sunday performance will include a Celtic celebration featuring the Teelin Irish Dance Company as well as a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Much of the performance will center around Broadway’s greatest show tunes and songs from films. …

A flash mob of Irish step dancers from Columbia's Teelin School of Irish Dance put on a show at Westfield Annapolis Mall.
About 35 students from the Columbia-based Teelin School of Irish Dance gave mall-goers a surprise performance Saturday in honor of St. Patrick's Day. The dancers in the flash mob, organized by Teelin's director Maureen Gately and Westfield Annapolis Mall, ranged from elementary to high school-aged.

St. Patrick’s day is the celebration of the death of the Irish saint, who died around 493 CE. Often times, St. Patrick, who is credited with converting much of Ireland to Christianity, is forgotten about in the process of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. It’s believed the shamrock is associated with the holiday because St. Patrick used the plant’s three leaves to explain Christianity's holy trinity to the Irish. Then again, many things are forgotten when celebrating St. Patrick's Day.
