Ulman to Deliver State of the County Address Thursday

Last year Ulman focused on seizing the moment.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is scheduled to deliver his State of the County address to the local business community at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City on Thursday. This will be Ulman's 7th time delivering the address that looks ahead at the priorities in the county. This year's address will focus on Howard County's emergence from the economic downturn in a position for growth and how the county has become a "model for Maryland," according to David Nitkin, director of communications for Howard County. In his 2012 address, Ulman discussed making Howard County a model for  21st century economic innovation. He spoke about founding the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship and working on the Inter-County Broadband Network, according …

If Ulman thinks that the intercounty broadband network is a model for innovation, he must be smoking something. I seriously doubt even one citizen has noticed a single diffence from that federal program that cost more than $100 million tax dollars. But, nice try?   more ›

Dispatch from the DNC: Calvin Ball's Thoughts on President Obama

Howard County Council Member Calvin Ball (D-District 2) writes about why he's supporting President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention.

I Am My Brother’s Keeper.  I Am My Sister’s Keeper. A slow roar fills the arena as an infectious chant begins… four more years!  Tears of joy and hope flow through the crowd while smiles beam from a room of diverse delegates and supporters who are full of pride and excitement for our President, his accomplishments and the prospects on the horizon upon his re-election. For the past few days, Democrats and Americans from all walks of life have been full of increasing energy as we shuttled into Charlotte united in our cause to make America a better place for those who are in need today and those who may look to us for help in the future. Today, we must stand up for those who need us the most.  We must stand up for those who have served our …

"I'd say it was a good return on the money, indeed! Though not necessarily in dollar equivalency." Yes, so a liberal arts degree is worth less than a STEM degree. Maybe a liberal arts degree makes you feel good or whatever, but you will have to "feel good" about it while standing in the unemployment line. And I really have to question the "need" to publicly subsidize colleges so that people can …   more ›

Gov. Martin O'Malley Shines in Convention Role

The Maryland governor focused his speech on taking the nation forward with Obama.

By JULIE BAUGHMAN/Capital News Service Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley used his prime-time slot at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday to make the case for Obama's record on jobs and the economy. The president "is moving America forward, not back," O'Malley repeated, hammering home the Obama campaign's slogan. Five times, he encouraged the crowd to chant along with him and wave their "Forward. Not Back" signs in unison. "Democratic governors, with the support of our president, are leading their states forward -- putting job creation first, balancing budgets, protecting priorities, making the tough decisions, right now, to create jobs and expand opportunity," O'Malley said. "Together with President Obama, we are moving America forward…

Wow.....what happened to all those blindly loyal politically charged comments that were predicted? LOL I guess O'Malley isn't that popular after all....or maybe my post of "factual information" about O'Malley scared them away. Liberals don't like facts.   more ›

Bizarre Football Play, Clint and Romney: Things to Know 8/31

Last night the college football season kicked off and one Maryland team was involved in a very odd play.

  1. To Tackle or Not to Tackle? - A Towson special teamer tackled a Kent State linebacker who was in the process of returning a muffed punt THE WRONG WAY. The video is hilarious, with Kent State players blocking for their teammate as he runs the wrong way and Towson players trying to catch him. To make the play even more bizarre (although somewhat less fun) the whole thing was the ref's fault. In college football a muffed punt is a downed ball wherever the other team recovers it, so it was first down for Kent State at the Towson 7. 2. Clint Eastwood Steals the Show - If you happened to tune into the Republican National Convention on Thursday evening, around 10 p.m., you likely caught Clint Eastwood talking to a chair. Slate's David Weigel…
