After Karen Brocklebank's son threatened to kill himself, she asked for support on social media and it came, in droves.
On Jan. 28, Karen Brocklebank wrote the first post on the Letters for Noah Facebook Page. The post described how her son was dealing with depression caused by bullying on social media sites and in his Howard County middle school. "This past weekend he posted on his Instagram account that he was planning to commit suicide on his birthday," wrote Brocklebank. "He also posted images of his arm where he has been cutting himself for the past two months." She was inspired to write about Noah's condition after sitting in the emergency room at his bed, where police had taken him after hearing about the Instagram post. "Noah has been dealing with bullying for the past year," wrote Brocklebank. "He has been feeling alone and left out, ostracized …

Noah, don't worry about those bullies, maybe they bully you because there is something in you that is not in them. Just remember that you have a whole future ahead of you and also think about the people who bully you, they will be satisfied if you kill yourself, and you don't want that.. I remember when I used to get bullied, I would come home and tell my parents and cry and would be depressed …   more ›

‘I can be charming, a good date and appropriately dressed.’ – Jessie Newburn.
Jessie Newburn, Columbia’s social media maven, has a new project she’s working on this year, one that is different enough to be featured on the Huffington Post and receive a big-brother warning from at least one friend in Columbia. She is trying to get taken on three dates in 2012 to ‘top-tier’ weddings in the D.C. and Baltimore area. It’s an idea that came from a friend designed to expand her already large social network and, in some ways, make Columbia more like home. This is something new for Newburn, 48, who is the director of communications and community engagement at the Columbia Association. She is also the co-founder of the group HocoBlogs, which encourages bloggers in the area. But to those who know her, it’s not a shock. “Anybody…

As a professional practitioner, I find this to be the most unethical and unprofessional situation I have ever heard. If Ms. Newburn would like to expand her networking opportunties, she should try to join one of the many professional organizations for communication practitioners such as the Public Relations Society of America - National Captial Chapter or the International Association of Business…   more ›
Commercial retailers want steeper punishment for the phenomenon of organized "flash robs."
By Brandon Cooper Capital News Service In less than 10 minutes, 78 teenagers and young adults cycled through a 7-Eleven and emptied the shelves of candy bars, snacks and drinks. Before police arrived, they were gone. The "flash rob" in Silver Spring last month was the fifth such mass theft in the Washington, D.C.-area since April, a crime trend defined by large groups of thieves descending on an unsuspecting store and quickly cleaning it out. Howard County has yet to see any such flash robs yet, but officials say the department is aware of the phenomenon. Police say the size and speed of the robbery crews make the crimes difficult to combat. Now, retail organizations and legislators in Maryland are pushing to increase penalties for flash …

If there were enough votes to pass gay marriage via referendum, wouldn't those same votes be enough to help Ulman take office? Not that I want him to, or think he will. I'm just saying, whatever votes he lost from one group he possibly gained from another.   more ›
