Howard County has prepared for a serious storm. It doesn't seem to have come.
Howard County Public Schools, libraries and senior centers are closed. County officials are on "liberal leave.” The Howard County Emergency Operations Center has been activated since 4 a.m. Public works crews have been salting the roads since 3 a.m. Plows have been standing by. But, “In a lot of the county, there’s nothing plowable,” county spokesman Mark Miller said. Residents can check the condition of county roads online. The storm dubbed ‘Snowquester’ that has been dumping heavy, wet snow on the area since just after midnight Wednesday has not wrought the havoc that many were expecting. A hazardous weather outlook warns of a nasty wintry mix.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Howard County Friday. According to the forecast discussion, we can expect a sleet and snow mix. The precipitation, whatever it may be, will likely begin around 6 p.m. NWS is predicting not much accumulation -- "maybe a trace to a couple hundredths of an inch." Temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-30s Friday afternoon and night.

The National Weather Service reports that the wintry mix is slated to begin after noon.
Those planning to leave the office for lunch may want to stay indoors Friday. The National Weather Service predicts that rain and sleet are likely to start after noon. Snow and sleet accumulation are anticipated to be less than half an inch, with temperatures near 39, according to the weather agency. The rain and snow are expected to return after midnight, and a precipitation amount of less than a tenth of an inch is possible.

Schools will close 1.5 hours early due to possible snow storm Friday afternoon.
All Howard County public schools will close 1.5 hours early Friday due to an expected afternoon snow storm. All aftercare programs, sponsored by the Columbia Association and the Department of Recreation & Parks in Howard County public schools have also been canceled, according to the school system. All school-sponsored and community-sponsored events, including high school athletic practices and games scheduled for this evening, are canceled. Baltimore, Carroll and Montgomery schools are among those that have announced earlier on Friday that they will close schools early Friday.
