Shop Local on Small Business Saturday

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Columbia?

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses in Columbia and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third year …

Black Friday Guide - Howard County

Check out Black Friday sales at major retailers and small businesses around the county.

Black Friday can be a tortorous event. On the one hand there are (occasionally dangerous) crowds at major retailers and outlets, but at the same time there are some great sales. This year, many large retailers such as Target and Walmart are opening on Thanksgiving evening, giving early bird shoppers the opportunity to shop until they drop—quite literally if they've had enough turkey. In addition, many local small businesses will be offering sales on their products. Below, we've compiled a list of local major retailers and small businesses that are offering Black Friday sales around Howard County on Nov. 23. For the big shops, you can click on the link in their name to view their full Black Friday flyers. Patch will continue to update …

Charter Deli Celebrates 10 Years in Columbia

"When I opened, this was just a cornfield," said owner Tom Nash.

Tom Nash, the owner of Charter Deli, said he started working in the food industry the day he turned 16. "On my 16th birday I drove to McDonald's and walked out with a polyster uniform," said Nash. "I've been working food service ever since." Now, he's 49, and the deli he started in June of 2002 in Columbia has been selected "Best Deli" in Howard County for five straight years by Howard Magazine. This June, the deli celebrated its 10-year anniversary at its nondescript location inside the Charter office park near Howard Community College and Howard County General Hospital. "When I opened, this was just a cornfield," said Nash of the area. Back then he was working as a part-owner of a deli in Silver Spring when a friend told him he should …

O'Malley Cites Columbia Business to Illustrate Importance of Health Care Ruling

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley used a Columbia businessman's letter to help explain why Thursday's Supreme Court health care ruling matters.

Gov. Martin O'Malley is highlighting a Columbia businessman's support for the Affordable Care Act as an example of why the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the law matters in Maryland. "The Affordable Care Act is critically important for our state's and nation's ability to create jobs, expand opportunity and protect the health of our children and parents," said O'Malley said in a release. "This matters for Maryland." O'Malley then linked to an op-ed that Brian England, owner of British American Auto Care in Columbia, wrote for the Baltimore Sun about how the act affected his business. In the op-ed, England explained that he and his wife would always dread August, when they would have to renew the health insurance policy that covered …

From Banker to Baker: New Businesswoman Sets Up Shop In Columbia

Linda Cheng, owner of Linda’s Bakery, talked to Patch about her dream of owning a bakery and why she decided to leave the corporate world to make it a reality.

With just word-of-mouth publicity and a few emails sent to friends and acquaintances, Linda’s Bakery opened in the Snowden Center earlier this month to a "great crowd." "I was very happy with the crowd — Howard County has very active foodies." owner Linda Cheng said. The Rockville resident said being a small business owner has its challenges but it’s worth it if you're doing something you really love. Cheng, 30, said she has been baking professionally for five years and graduated with honors from the L’Academie de Cuisine’s Pastry Arts Program in Gaithersburg. She has worked at a number of bakeries over the last few years, but recently decided to strike out on her own. Despite her current culinary credentials, at one time Cheng saw herself…

Free Parking, Santa and ‘Nog: Small Businesses Want You, Bad

Small Business Saturday comes to your town this weekend.

Small businesses in quaint retail districts across the suburban Baltimore/D.C. region will be offering promotions and other enticements for shoppers who want to buy local for the holidays. More than a dozen public, private and advocacy organizations, supported by American Express OPEN, the company's small business unit, have teamed up to declare Nov. 26 as Small Business Saturday. (Full dislosure: American Express has signed on as a sponsor of small business-related content on Patch during the holidays.) There are incentives for both small businesses and shoppers. Business owners who sign up for the Facebook page receive a $100 Facebook advertising credit to help build an online presence for their business. For shoppers, American Express …

Poll: Will You Trade Thanksgiving Family Time For Holiday Deals?

Stores are competing for consumers looking for deals in a tough economy.

It appears holiday promotions will be more aggressive than ever this year. Walmart, Toys "R" Us and Gap are among the retailers who have said they’ll be open Thanksgiving Day. Target, Macy’s, Kohls and Best Buy will open at midnight for Black Friday deals, according to the Contra Costa Times, which said it was only a few years ago when Black Friday didn’t start until 5 a.m. And the promotions for Christmas shopping are already well underway. The week after Halloween, Arundel Mills had its Santa house up and running. Mr. Claus started making the rounds in the Mall at Columbia on Nov. 11. Costco started its Christmas decorating in August, according to The Consumerist, a subsidiary of Consumer Reports. Will you be shopping on Thanksgiving? …

We do no Christmas shopping or gift giving at all to our adult children and family. Instead with adopt families and give money to local agencies that help those in need. I hate how commercialized the Holiday season has become so I do not partake.   more ›
