Richard Mojica Jr. admitted to starting a fire underneath a trailer at Sears.
A Columbia teen pleaded guilty at Howard County Circuit Court on Wednesday to setting two fires near the Mall in Columbia in May. Richard N. Mojica Jr., 18, of the 10300 block of Swift Stream Place, was arrested in May and charged with starting fires that resulted in more than $10,000 in damages and property loss, according to police, including a fire outside Sears at the Mall in Columbia. Police arrested Mojica after they said they witnessed him running from a dumpster fire near Lord and Taylor at the Mall in Columbia on May 6, just three days after a fire was set underneath a trailer at the Sears loading dock. Police arrested the suspect after watching him flee from a dumpster fire at the Mall in Columbia.
Richard N. Mojica Jr., 18, of the 10300 Block of Swift Stream Place, was charged with 16 counts related to a number of fires throughout Columbia, including the Thursday morning fire in a trailer near Sears at the Mall in Columbia, police said. Mojica was charged Sunday with seven counts of arson, eight counts of malicious burning and one count of reckless endangerment, according to court records. Police said Mojica caused an estimated $400,000 in damages and property loss. The fire started around 6 a.m. this morning and caused significant smoke damage to the interior of Sears, according to fire officials.
A fire broke out in a trailer located near the Sears at the Mall in Columbia around 5:40 a.m. Thursday morning, according to Howard County fire officials. As the fire was being extinguished, smoke poured into the interior of Sears causing extensive damage, according to Howard County Fire and Rescue Services. The trailer was reportedly attached to a loading dock. The fire was under control by 8 a.m., officials said. An airboat from Montgomery County was requested to assist with ventilating the mall to remove smoke, according to fire officials. Fire crews were on the scene throughout the morning on Thursday.
