Ann De Lacy has a lot of questions about the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), and she plans to bring them all to the table as a newly elected member of the Board of Education. “I will continue to work very hard to make sure that things are open, public and that we have a truly world class school system for every single student in Howard County,” she said Wednesday morning. “I’m going to ask tough questions and expect honest answers.” In a race that at times saw candidates separated by less than one percent, De Lacy came in second place, with 16.6 percent of the vote. On Monday, Patch spoke with candidates for Board of Education, perhaps the tightest race in Tuesday's election in Howard County . The six candidates are hoping to be one of three candidates who win seats. Voters select three candidates on the ballot. Here's more on each candidate, listed in alphabetical order: Bob Ballinger Ballinger, of Ellicott City, said on Monday he was spending the last few hours before Tuesday’s election with good friends and making sure his signs are at the polls. Voters were trickling in at five primary locations in Columbia.
Only 39 voters had strolled into the polls at Harper's Choice Middle School by 11 a.m. on Maryland's primary election day. At Long Reach High School, one of the largest precincts in the city, the number was only marginally higher--127 voters as of 11 a.m. Despite a loaded Board of Education field and a chance to participate in an ongoing Republican presidential primary, Maryland voters have not rushed to cast ballots in Tuesday's primary election. "Turnout has been horrifyingly bad," said Mike Holt, an election judge posted at Long Reach High School. It doesn't sound like anything was said against DeLacy, just the idea of shuffling kids based on income. I actually like the idea of basic education principles being brought back to the classroom. As far as redistricting though, let's solve the problems, not just re-shuffle them. You want to see improvement?
