New Restaurant Offers Indian and Nepalese Food in West Columbia

The restaurant opened March 15.

While east Columbia boasts popular Indian restaurants like Royal Taj and House of India, getting a curry fix can be difficult on the west side. That changed last month when Curry and Kabob opened in Wilde Lake Village Center on March 15. Located next to The Melting Pot and Bagel Bin, the restaurant offers both Indian and Nepalese cuisine. "We've been doing well," said owner Chandra Chhantyal on Wednesday, about the restaurant's first 15 days in business. Business is likely to pick up soon. On Wednesday local food blog HowChow published a review saying, "it's a talented kitchen in a personable restaurant." The restaurant offers Indian signatures like chicken tikka masala ($14.95), lamb curry ($15.95), and garlic naan ($3.50); but also …

Post Critic Says Ale House Columbia 'Worth the Trip'

A Washington Post nightlife critic calls the Columbia bar impressive and "a fine showcase for Oliver Ales."

Washington Post nightlife critic Fritz Hahn made the trip up Route 29 to visit Columbia's newest beer bar—Ale House Columbia—last week. In his review, he described the restaurant which serves beer brewed in Baltimore as "a fine showcase for Oliver Ales, and it's a good place to watch a game with a cold brew in hand." He called the tap list of more than 20 beers impressive and said coupled with "a taco platter or one of the juicy burgers; it's worth the trip." The bar, which opened in December, has been popular enough to cause a parking problem in the main the lot, which is shared with other restaurants, a gym and retail stores. It's a problem the Post critic also pointed out. Read the full review by clicking here. Have you been to Ale …

Frisco Tap House Expanding, Adding Patio, More Parking

The expansion will add a new dining area, a patio and 20 additional parking spots.

Frisco Tap House and Brewery is in the midst of a major expansion that will add a new dining area, an outdoor patio and 20 additional parking spots to the restaurant. The restaurant, located at 6695 Dobbin Road, has acquired the adjoining space formerly occupied by Columbia Oak, according to General Manager Alex Taylor. Taylor said they're planning to add between 100 to 120 more seats in that area, which he estimated at about 1,200 square feet. The new dining area will feature a central glass-encased fireplace, as well as two drop-down TV displays that will list all the beers the bar has on tap, said Taylor. A door along the main wall in the restaurant will be added to access the new dining area, said Taylor. Outside, along the side …

Too Much Fast Food in Howard County?

According to one study, more than 50 percent of restaurants in the county are fast food. Is that too much?

Howard County was recently named the healthiest in the state by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The county came in first or second healthiest in all but one of six categories - Physical Environment which included percentage of all restaurants that are fast food establishments: 58 percent in Howard County. To be clear, the state average was 60 percent, so relatively, we're not an outlier. But the national benchmark is 27 percent. The data used in the study came from the USDA's Food Environment Atlas, a warehouse of food access statistics. The USDA asserts a correlation between eating out and health risks, as do the National Institutes of Health and many others. So what do you think? Are there too many fast food restaurants in Howard …
