An organizer said the race through Town Center in Columbia will have a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Organizers of the Iron Girl Half Marathon, set to take place in Columbia’s Town Center on April 28, said Wednesday they are working with police to bolster security after a bombing at the Boston Marathon on Monday killed three and injured more than 130. “We are working with police and emergency management services to address additional security measures and procedures for the race,” said Kari Ebeling, chief operating officer of TriColumbia. “We’re going to take all the precautions they advise us to take,” said Ebeling. Ebeling said organizers plan to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing with a moment of silence before the race. She said the area running community has been standing in solidarity with Boston and called the …

The Colorado-based restaurant chain offers shwarmas, falafel and kabobs.
Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill announced earlier this month it will open its new Columbia location on March 13. The restaurant, which is similar in style to Chipotle, offers menu items like shwarma, pitas, falafel and kabobs that can be customized with vegetables and sauces for prices between $5 and $10. The restaurant will open at 6455 Dobbin Road in Dobbin Center, near Panera Bread and Wal-Mart. “I feel our made-from-scratch Mediterranean menu sets us apart and intrigues the many families and business professionals in the area looking for a fast yet fresh and healthy lunch or dinner option," said Scott Black, Garbanzo's director of operations, in a statement. "We are looking forward to establishing ourselves in the Columbia area and …

The new restaurant will feature authentic Mexican fare such as tacos al pastor, barbacoa and 100 percent agave margaritas.
With menu items such as flautas de puerco (pulled pork in crispy tortillas with pico de gallo), tacos al pastor and barbacoa enchiladas, it's hard not to get hungry thinking about Xitomate opening in Columbia. And we didn't even mention the $7 agave margaritas. Columbia's newest restaurant will have a soft opening for customers at the former location of Donna's (5850 Waterloo Road) on Wednesday. "We are an authentic Mexican restaurant," said Octavio Moreno, the general manger for Xitomate as well as Columbia's Azul 17. "The food is authentic and we make everything fresh." The new restaurant is owner Julio Soto's latest concept. Soto also owns Azul 17 and Lily's Mexican Market. Moreno said the food and drink offerings at Xitomate will be …

Patch took a tour of the new restaurant last week.
The Ale House Columbia had planned on opening before Thanksgiving, but after a few construction setbacks, the owners said they hope to open on Dec. 10. "We're looking to open on Dec. 10," said co-owner Justin Dvorkin. "And we're shooting for that Friday [Dec. 14] to have a kick-off celebration." The exterior of the restaurant looked nearly complete last week, as workers adjusted the sign over the front entrance. Inside, the restaurant was still a work-in-progress. The bars were built, the dividers were up, but there was no floor, televisions, tables or computers. Dvorkin said those additions will be installed quickly once the floor is done, which a worker was installing on Tuesday. He said the whole building has been re-constructed, …

A look inside Columbia's newest grocery store, which is set to open Sunday, June 17 at 7:00 a.m.
Wendy Webster, the Columbia store manager, said when Wegmans opens on Sunday, "We'll change grocery shopping in Columbia forever." The new store is filled with a huge, seemingly overwhelming, selection of grocery store products. According to a Wegmans official, there will be 700 items of produce, 160 people making fresh food, 300 cheeses on sale from around the world, dry aged beef, a variety of daily-changing seafood and countless other food items. The store's head chef, Tom Schwarzweller, is in charge of the 160 cooks who will prepare the food. He said six months ago the employees charged with preparing food began learning their specialties. There will be sushi rollers, bread bakers, pastry makers, Indian chefs and seafood steamers. "We'…

In the past, openings have reportedly included "lounge chairs, sleeping bags and pup tents."
Should Howard County decline to participate in the heydey that has characterized previous Wegmans store openings out of self respect? Blogger and Columbia Association Board Member Tom Coale raised the issue in his blog in response to reports from Explore Howard that said Wegmans officials expect thousands to congregate before the store's 7 a.m. Sunday (June 17) opening in Columbia at 8855 McGaw Road. In the past, openings have included "lounge chairs, sleeping bags and pup tents," the paper reported. Tell us in comments: Will you be lugging lounge chairs to be among the first the see the new Columbia Wegmans? Or do you think that is an unnecessary display? Coale's response? "I truly hope that my fellow HoCo'ers have the dignity and self-…
