General Assembly Passes Merriweather Noise Bill

The bill will allow the concert venue to amplify sound up to 95 decibels from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Maryland legislators passed a locally controversial bill during the 2013 session that codifies the level of noise coming from Merriweather Post Pavilion. The bill allows Merriweather to produce sound up to 95 decibels from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. It was submitted by the Howard County delegation. Recreation and Parks Working on Solution for Blandair Noise

County's recreation and parks director says, "We know we have to figure out a way to reduce noise impact."

"We know we have to figure out a way to reduce the noise impact," said John Byrd, recreation and parks director. Byrd said his department will be looking at when and how leagues use amplified sound, how late the lights belong on and whether the 11 p.m. curfew for the park is too late. About 70 residents who live near the newly opened park expressed their frustations to Byrd and recreation and parks staff during a community meeting at the Other Barn in Oakland Mills last week, according to Sandy Cedarbaum, Village Manager for…

Speak Out: Is Noise a Problem at Blandair Park?

Neighbors beginning to voice concern over noise at Blandair Park.

It's no longer just fun and games at Howard County's Blandair Park—the new park is generating a significant amount of noise, according to a report published in Explore Howard. Neighbors of the park said noises such as air horns, whistles, buzzers and public address speakers are creating a situation in which the park has become a nuisance, according to the report. A meeting to allow residents to discuss the noise issues  is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Other Barn in Oakland Mills. The park, which is open from sunrise to 11 p.m., officially opened in March, and is home to lacrosse, soccer and football practices and games on its three synthetic fields—which are lit at night. The park also hosts large tournaments that draw a …
