HCC Battles Back, Defeats CCBC Catonsville

Dragons overcome a rough first half to beat the Cardinals, 72-66.

In a game of two distinctly different halves, the Howard Community College men's basketball team battled back to defeat the Community College of Baltimore County's Catonsville campus, 72-66, Wednesday night. Catonsville dominated the first half and led 39-31 at the break, but the Dragons responded by controlling the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 41-27.  In the first half, CCBC dribble penetration was effective and allowed the Cardinals to control the tempo and build the 8-point lead they enjoyed at halftime.  Howard Coach Mike Smelkinson challenged his team at the break to pick up the intensity and play a more physical game in the second half.  HCC responded with a different attitude. HCC Loses Close Game to No. 1 Hagerstown

Dragons hang tough with top conference team; lose by four points.

When the Howard Community Community College men's basketball team hosted Hagerstown Community College on Sunday, the coaching staff knew the Dragons were in for a tough game against their conference's No. 1 team. So it was a moral victory to hold Hagerstown to 30 first-half points (the score was tied at 30 at the half) and to ultimately lose the game by just four points, according to coaches. Hagerstown won the conference game, 76-72. “We did a good job on the defensive end, holding the top team in the league to 76 points," said Dragons Head Coach Mike Smelkinson.  Hagerstown pulled away from HCC early in the second half with timely 3-point shots and transition points to build a 49-40 lead.
