The chief executive officer of Howard County’s Economic Development Authority will be sworn into office at 10 a.m. Friday in Annapolis.
Laura Neuman, who was selected to be the new county executive, was greeted with a rush of applause moments after she received a majority vote Thursday from the Anne Arundel County Council. Neuman, 46, of Annapolis, currently serves as the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority. She gave a rousing speech during her interview with council members on Thursday night, laying her whole life bare—her trials and successes in making her own way in the world. The Anne Arundel County Council Thursday night voted in Laura Neuman, chief executive officer of Howard County’s Economic Development Authority, to replace its convicted county executive.
The Anne Arundel County Council late Thursday chose Howard County official Laura Neuman to be the Anne Arundel county executive, replacing John Leopold, who was convicted of misconduct in office. Leopold resigned this month after a judge found him guilty on two counts. Neuman was seen as a surprise choice, besting other more high-profile candidates. Howard County's Economic Development Authority CEO, Laura Neuman, is one of 16 candidates who have submitted applications this month to become Anne Arundel County Executive. Neuman, a former entreprenuer and private sector CEO, has lived in Anne Arundel for over 20 years. She joined the Economic Development Authority in the spring of 2011. The county executive position became open after the former county executive, John Leopold, a Republican, resigned on Feb. 1 in the wake of being found guilty of misconduct in office. By law, the Anne Arundel County Council is charged with replacing Leopold with another Republican.
