The redevelopment of Columbia's first village center is expected to complete construction in about two years, said officials Wednesday.
Officials gathered Wednesday to break ground at the Wilde Lake Village Center, a $17 million redevelopment project that will bring new retail space, offices and apartments to the property that was built in 1967. "This is a marathon and we're in the final stretch," said Geoff Glazer, vice president of Kimco Realty, the development company handling the construction. At the event on Wednesday, Kimco staff, local residents, and public officials mingled under an event tent. Glazer spoke about the delays in beginning development due to a vocal Wilde Lake community that criticized the company's plans throughout the process. "This is not a shy village," said Glazer. "They have an opinion and they will share it with you." Plans to develop the …

The company is looking at possibly acquiring the KFC building, which was abandoned in late April and its future is uncertain.
Kimco Realty is interested in acquiring the currently abandoned KFC building in Wilde Lake and on Wednesday received approval for its development plan for the Wilde Lake Village Center. Geoff Glazer, Kimco’s vice president of development and acquisition for the Mid-Atlantic region, confirmed on Friday that Kimco is interested in purchasing the old KFC building at 5400 Lynx Lane. The building was shuttered by KFC in late April. “We’re looking at acquiring it,” Glazer said on Friday. “We’re trying to get control, but there’s a process.” In April, Patch readers said they’d be interested in a fast-food restaurant, such as Sonic, for the space. Tell us: What do you think Kimco should do with the old KFC, if it acquires it? Glazer said Kimco …

Village officials encourage residents to view the plans and comment at a Monday meeting.
Wilde Lake Village Center’s long-awaited redevelopment moves incrementally forward Dec. 19 when the property’s owner unveils architectural plans for new residential buildings to the village board at a 7 p.m. public meeting at Slayton House. Giant Food, the center’s anchor supermarket, closed in 2006. Since then, other merchants have shuttered shops and overall business has declined, said Trevor Gardner, manager of Today’s Catch, a seafood store in business for 30 years at Wilde Lake. “New redevelopment will bring life back into the center,” he said. Kimco Realty Corporation, which owns the 40-plus-year-old retail hub for Wilde Lake Village, would not return inquiries about redevelopment plans. However, both Village Board Village Chairman …

Kimco is expected to submit its application soon.
Residents had three weeks in which to give formal feedback on the proposed redevelopment of Wilde Lake Village Center, but the volume of comments hasn’t been as abundant as the village board chairman had hoped. “We’d like to have the broadest feedback from the community in order to reflect their opinions as we move forward in this process,” chairman Bill Santos said in an interview with Patch. “It’s an important component … in trying to determine whether or not to approve the plan.” Officials from Kimco Realty Corporation, which owns the village center, have heard from Wilde Lake residents in past meetings in which the developers presented plans for revamping the retail and office site, which is more than 40 years old. The latest …

agree - the fear was/is that "big corporation" does not care about the original concept of Columbia - your local village center should have a drug store, grocery store, a bank, an eatery, and a few other retailers so that you do not have to have a car to get what you need. I came to Columbia and raised my children here because of Mr. Rouse's vision. Big business and too many apartments and other …   more ›
