Ulman Says County is a Model for Maryland

Howard County Executive said progress in the county is a model for the state in his State of the County address.

County Executive Ken Ulman proclaimed that Howard County’s investments in education, sustainability and public health have made it a model for the rest of the state in his State of the County address on Thursday. Addressing a room filled with businesspeople at Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Ulman joked about social media and shouted-out to the Ravens. But he also focused on the county’s lowest unemployment rate in the state and its Triple-A bond rating. “It is important to note that none of these accomplishments have been achieved by accident,” said Ulman. “They all happen by design. They are the result of the decisions we have made together.”  “Through our choices and our decisions, we have created a model for Maryland,” said Ulman.  In …

Ulman Raises $1.14 Million in 2012

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman now has $2.13 million in available campaign cash, but trails at least one expected gubernatorial candidate.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced Wednesday that he raised $1.14 million in campaign donations in 2012, giving him a total of $2.13 million. The $1.14 million raised in 2012 is a slight increase from his 2011 total when he took in $1.06 million. “I am humbled and grateful that so many people have chosen to support our vision for progress, economic growth, common sense and innovative solutions,” Ulman said in a statement. “I believe Maryland is the greatest state in the country, and I will continue to work hard to help us fulfill our potential.” Ulman is considered by many to be a candidate for governor in 2014, as he cannot run for Howard County Executive again due to term limits. Other Democratic candidates thought to be …

Ulman Says He Would Support Assault Weapons Ban

Howard County Executive said he'd also support restrictions on magazine size.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said Monday he'd support a ban on assault weapons and regulations on gun magazine size as public officials across the country weigh in on gun policy after the deadly school shooting in Connecticut. "We need to have some common sense gun regulation," said Ulman at a press conference inside the George Howard Building in Ellicott City. "I've talked to a lot of friends and a lot of people I know who are very strong supporters of the Second Amendment who have said now is the time," said Ulman. "You've got to take a test to get a driver's license. Hopefully we can agree there ought to be basic steps that ensure people are responsible." Ulman said that banning assault weapons and reducing magazine size is not a…

Ken Ulman Picks Up Trash in Redskins Garb

Ken Ulman dropped by Landover Wednesday to satisfy a bet with his Prince George's County equal.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman dropped by Landover on Wednesday to pick up roadside trash in a Redskins jersey, fulfilling the terms of a wager with Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker. The two top officials had placed a friendly bet on Sunday's matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. Ulman, a diehard Ravens fan, lost out when Baltimore fell to the 'Skins 31-28 in overtime. Baker, ever the gracious victor, invited Ulman earlier this week to meet him at the Prince George's County Sports & Learning Complex in the shadow of FedEx Field. Though Ulman arrived sporting purple, he soon found himself clad in the burgundy-and-gold jersey of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. After some friendly trash talk…

Ulman to Make Good on Redskins/ Ravens Bet

After losing a bet, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said he'd be picking up trash in Prince George's wearing a Redskins jersey.

County Executive Ken Ulman said he plans to be in Prince George's County later this week picking up trash while singing 'Hail to the Redskins' and wearing a Redskins jersey after losing a bet to Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker. Ulman is scheduled to make good on the bet on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Wayne Curry Sports and Learning Center in Landover. In a YouTube video released on Monday, Ulman said, "I'm having a tough, tough day. As you know the Ravens lost, and I lost my bet to [Baker]." Last week, Ulman challenged Baker to a bet that his favorite football team, the Ravens, would beat Baker's Redskins. On Sunday, the Redskins pulled off a 31-28 dramatic come-from-behind win in overtime. Now, Ulman is asking for a …

Baker Ups Ante on Ulman's Ravens/ Redskins Bet

The two county executives have a lot riding on Sunday's game.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Baltimore-Washington corridor: it is on. That's the message out from Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman ahead of Sunday's Ravens-Redskins matchup at FedEx Field. The two sparred on Fox 5 Thursday night, agreeing to a friendly wager over the game, which Ulman first posed to Baker earlier in the week in a YouTube video. Baker upped the ante even more during their on-air interview, suggesting that Ulman would have to pick up trash along Prince George's County roads while singing "Hail to the Redskins" should the Ravens lose. Ulman, apparently confident of a win, accepted. Ulman, a proud Ravens fan, had thrown down the gauntlet earlier by offering to wear the …

Ulman: 'Two Little Two Late'

Ken Ulman has had it up to here ... with the Redskins. And he's putting his faith to the test.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is fed up and he wants Prince Georges County Executive Rushern Baker to know. “I’m sick of hearing about the Redskins’ new quarterback,” Ulman said in a statement.  “RG III will be TWO little and TWO late to handle the stifling Ravens defense," he said, referring to Redskins' quarterback Robert Lee Griffin III. Ulman and Rushern are supposed to attend this weekend's match between the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens at the Redskins' stadium. Ulman issued a challenge to Baker in advance of the game: if the Redskins win, he'll light up the Howard County government buildings in the Redskins' colors, burgundy and gold.  And he'll wear an RG3 jersey to work But if the Ravens win? Then Ulman wants …

Parking in Ellicott City? There's an App for That

A new mobile application that shows available parking in the Historic District has gone online.

If you want to find parking in Ellicott City, County Executive Ken Ulman told a small crowd standing outside the Howard County Welcome Center Thursday morning, “We now have an app for that.” The app – mobile phone application -- is Streetline’s Parker. It allows people to look up real-time information about available parking spaces in the Historic District. Ulman said it addresses a problem that was brought to light as the result of a parking study carried out when he came into office.  "One of the biggest challenges that we face … is parking,” Ulman said. “More importantly, it’s frankly the perception of parking.” For visitors to the Historic District, particularly those from out of town, “How would you know that right behind the …

County Executive Ken Ulman said he would vote Friday.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman wrote in a blog post Friday that he was going to vote for school board candidates Janet Siddiqui, Jackie Scott and Ellen Flynn Giles as part of early voting at the Florence Bain Center on Friday. "I have worked with both Ellen and Janet for a number of years, and I know how committed they are to ensuring our students receive a top-notch education," wrote Ulman on why he made the decision to support those three candidates in a competitive Howard County Board of Education race. "Jackie Scott is a leader who will bring energy and passion to the Board, and I am proud to call her my friend." In addition, Ulman said he would vote yes on Question 4, the Dream Act, Question 6, in support of gay marriage, and …

The polls will stay open later to make up for time lost during Hurricane Sandy.

Today, Friday, Nov. 2, is the last day to participate in early voting before next week’s General Election. Early voting was scheduled to run through 8 p.m. Thursday, but was extended after Hurricane Sandy led officials to keep the polls closed on Monday and Tuesday. Polls will open at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 and close at 9 p.m. This is the third year that Maryland voters have the opportunity to vote ahead of the General Election. To bring attention to the extended hours, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman will cast his vote Friday at the Florence Bain Senior Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia.  Voters can also cast their ballots at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road and the Ridgely's Run Community Center, 8400 …
