Perfect No More: Oakland Mills Falls to Gwynn Park For Second Straight Year

Gwynn Park forced four Scorpions turnovers in the last 1 minute and 48 seconds of the game to steal a win away from Oakland Mills, 52-48. This was the Scorpions' lone loss on the season – they end the year at 25-1.

It was a different season, but it was the same result for the previously undefeated Oakland Mills Scorpions. Last year, the Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets knocked the Scorpions out of the playoffs in the 2A South regional championship. And this year was no different. The Scorpions once again found themselves on the court against Gwynn Park in the regional championship. And once again they found themselves on the losing end of a Yellow Jackets’ comeback. Oakland Mills jumped out to an early lead, going up by as many as seven points, but Gwynn Park hung around, waiting for their opportunity. They got it in the fourth quarter. Oakland Mills led by three points with 1:48 remaining in the game. But the Scorpions then turned the ball over on four …

Oakland Mills Overcomes Frederick Douglass; Three Wins Separate Scorpions From 2A State Championship

The Scorpions stumbled early with senior sensation Greg Whittington (19 points) riding the bench in foul trouble, but Oakland Mills dominated the second half, outscoring the Eagles 34-21 in the game’s final two quarters to come away with the tough win.

For the second straight game, Oakland Mills’ 6-foot-9 senior superstar, Greg Whittington, found himself on the bench early after picking up two quick fouls in the first quarter. And for the second straight game, the Scorpions’ supporting cast stepped up. With Whittington riding the bench, Kerry Bethea (15 points) and Joe Kiely (13) took over the Oakland Mills offense. The duo combined to score 28 of the team’s 55 points, helping the Scorpions triumph, 55-42, in a tight one against the fourth-seeded Frederick Douglass Eagles. “We will take that any day of the week,” said Oakland Mills head coach Jon Browne. “That was a good win for us.” It was a win that brought the Scorpions to 25-0. It was a win that leaves them just three victories …

Road to Perfection: Joe Kiely Comes Up Big as Oakland Mills Rolls to 24-0, Advances in Playoffs

When the Scorpions needed someone to take over, senior Joe Kiely stepped up, scoring a game-high 26 points and grabbing eight steals.

The Oakland Mills Scorpions needed someone else to step up. Greg Whittington, the team’s leading scorer all season, found himself on the bench early with two fouls while his Scorpions were in a close battle with the Central High School Falcons. And when he was on the court he was played tough, with Central pressuring him when he was away from the ball and throwing extra defenders on him when the ball was in his hands. With Whittington neutralized and his team needing a spark, Joe Kiely answered the call. His coach calls the senior point guard “Playoff Joe” for a reason. During Monday night’s 2A South regional playoff game, Kiely showed why. Kiely was unstoppable early, scoring 19 of his game-high 26 points in the first half and helping …

Yea, we were keeping up with the score while we were at the OM game. I am definitely rooting for Wilde Lake. They have a solid team - nothing flashy, but they can play. And I was at that football game against River Hill in the postseason...simply awesome.   more ›

Still Perfect: Oakland Mills Rolls to 23-0 With Win Over Broadneck in Annual District V Championship Game

Oakland Mills’ Greg Whittington nearly outscored Broadneck himself, racking up 23 points in just 26 minutes of play, as the Scorpions coasted to the District V crown, 58-24.

In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. That old saying gets thrown around more than is typically appropriate. But in Oakland Mills’ case, it's close to the truth. The Scorpions’ season is far from over – they are scheduled to start the Division 2A state playoffs on Monday after a first-round bye, facing the winner of the game between Patuxent High School and Central High School. First, however, they had Wednesday night’s District V championship game – an annual event that pits the Howard County regular season champion against the Anne Arundel County regular season champion. Oakland Mills faced the 20-2 Broadneck Bruins in what was supposed to be the biggest test for the Scorpions thus far. But in typical Oakland Mills fashion…

Perfection: Oakland Mills Finishes the Regular Season at 22-0 With Win Over Mt. Hebron

Greg Whittington led all scorers with 34 points, eclipsing the 1000-point mark for his career as the Scorpions rolled over the Vikings, 58-38.

Perfect. No other word can better describe Oakland Mills’ magical basketball season. On Thursday, the Scorpions entered their game with the Mt. Hebron Vikings at 21-0 and just one win away from a perfect regular season – a feat never before accomplished in the school’s 38-year history. Oakland Mills quickly pulled away from the visiting Vikings, outscoring Mt. Hebron 29-8 in the first half behind the stellar play of senior forward Greg Whittington. Whittington led all scorers with 34 points – nearly outscoring the opposition all by himself. And that allowed the Scorpions to rewrite the history books with their 22nd victory of the season, a 58-38 wire-to-wire win. “I’m at a loss right now for words, to be honest with you,” said Oakland …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Edge Out Glenelg Gladiators in Battle of Howard County Powerhouses

Greg Whittington (20 points), James Peters (14), and Joe Kiely (10) all hit key fourth-quarter shots to help the Scorpions move past the second place Gladiators, 57-53, in a dramatic wire-to-wire victory Thursday night. And a key player is about to return

The Glenelg Gladiators' record stood at 13-6 overall, 13-3 in Howard County, placing them in second place Thursday night with just three games remaining in the season. They had no realistic chance at catching up in the standings with the undefeated Oakland Mills Scorpions, who were 19-0, including 16-0 in-county. They still had plenty of motivation. It was senior night at Glenelg High School, and the Gladiators wanted nothing more than to send their nine graduating players off not only with a win, but with a win that would both snap Oakland Mills’ perfect season and avenge Glenelg’s Dec. 20 loss to the Scorpions. Oakland Mills had a different result in mind. James Peters scored the Scorpions’ first basket just 12 seconds into the game to …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Survive Scare in Win Over Centennial Eagles

Greg Whittington (21 points), James Peters (17), Nick Zayatz (10), and Joe Kiely (7) helped the Scorpions rally back after blowing a 17-point lead. With the 62-55 win, Oakland Mills improved to 19-0.

North Carolina versus Duke. Ravens versus Steelers. Oakland Mills versus Centennial. Sports thrive on great rivalries – games between teams that bring out the best in each other. Be it out of respect, hatred or the shear will to win, rivals always manage to play their best when facing one another, a point that Centennial and Oakland Mills prove time and time again. The Scorpions had narrowly escaped Centennial High School earlier this season with a 61-58 victory. In that game, Oakland Mills was down by eight points entering the fourth quarter before mounting a furious comeback behind the stellar play of junior forward Kerry Bethea, who scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in that game’s final eight minutes. The Scorpions are now without …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Cruise Past Marriotts Ridge Mustangs, Win 17th Game of Season

The Mustangs had no answer for Oakland Mills star Greg Whittington, who racked up 27 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks to lead the Scorpions to a 31 points victory, 76-45.

Perfection. It is a tricky concept, because, as individuals, none of us will ever be perfect. But as sports have taught us throughout the years, perfection can be accomplished as a collective group. The 1972 Miami Dolphins ended their season with a 17-0 record and won Super Bowl VII. Perfect. The 1976 Indiana Hoosiers basketball team went 32-0 and won the Division I National Championship. Perfect. And upon entering their game with the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs on Thursday, the Oakland Mills Scorpions put their perfect 16-0 record on the line. The game was close early, but in the end the Scorpions and their 6-foot-9 center, Greg Whittington, proved to be too much for the Mustangs. Whittington finished with a game-high 27 points to go along …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Coast To 15-0 In Win Over Howard High

Oakland Mills’ Greg Whittington posted his 12th double-double of the season – compiling 31 points and 10 rebounds – to lift the Scorpions past the Howard Lions, 65-53.

The Oakland Mills boys’ basketball team had not played a game since their Jan. 14 win over the River Hill Hawks. That means it had been two weeks between when the Scorpions had last played and when they returned to the court on Friday. Fourteen Days. Three-hundred-thirty-six hours. Twenty-thousand-one-hundred-sixty minutes. One-million-two-hundred-nine-thousand-six-hundred seconds.  Yet not even time itself could slow down the red-hot Oakland Mills team. Greg Whittington put up 31 points and 10 rebounds, and the Scorpions cruised to their 15th victory of the season, winning 65-53 over visiting Howard High School.  “We are not running any tricks or smoke and mirrors here,” said Oakland Mills head coach Jon Browne. “We want to get the ball …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Remain Undefeated, Crush River Hill

The Oakland Mills High School Scorpions improve to 14-0, but they find themselves without one of their leading scorers for the rest of the season.

As the saying goes, winning heals all wounds. The Oakland Mills Scorpions were hoping that old cliché was right – as they were recently hurt by the abrupt departure of one of their own. On Friday night the Scorpions found themselves without the player that Coach Jon Browne once called the team’s “emotional leader,” Kerry Bethea, who left the team earlier this week. “He had issues Wednesday at the Wilde Lake game and he decided that he couldn’t do this anymore,” Browne said. “It was his decision.” As a result, Oakland Mills unveiled their new-look Scorpions against one of the top teams in Howard County, the 8-5 River Hill Hawks. But Browne was confident in his team’s ability to overcome adversity. “I am not concerned about who we were,” …
