It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. Maryland Unlikely To See Large Impact From Nor'easter
A National Weather Service forecaster said Maryland is unlikely to get much of a hit from the nor'easter developing to the southeast, one that could hit areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Here we go again? Just a week after Superstorm Sandy rumbled up the eastern seaboard, a powerful nor'easter appears set to do the same, with the outside chance to dump a wintry mix on parts of Maryland. In an advisory Monday, the National Weather Service said the storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Tuesday before moving north. Ken Widelski, a forecaster with the NWS in Sterling, VA, said in a phone interview that how much precipitiation the Baltimore area gets—if any—depends on how far west the storm forms. Howard and Carroll counties were largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. While residents and officials continue to clean up after a superstorm hit the East Coast, we take a look at the most dramatic images from the superstorm.
It's been a long couple of days for residents along the East Coast of the United States. First, they prepared for Hurricane Sandy's arrival, amid claims it was the "perfect storm"—filling sandbags, boarding up buildings and buying supplies over the weekend. On Monday, as Sandy approached the Northeast, the winds picked up and officials began evacuations and last-minute preparations, while businesses closed early to avoid the brunt of the superstorm. State Not Likely to Assess Fee on County for Sewage Spill
The state environmental department will classify Sandy as a "20-year-storm" and probably will not assess sewage overflow penalties.
The Maryland Department of the Environment will likely not assess a penalty to Howard County for sewage overflow resulting from a loss of electricity at the county's wastewater plant in Savage, according to a spokesman. "As a general rule, we do not assess penalties for these types of storms," said Jay Apperson, a spokesman for MDE. Apperson said MDE does have legal agreements with large districts such as Howard County that would allow them to assess overflow fees when sewage flows into rivers, but due to the nature of superstorm Sandy, he said it wasn't likley the county would suffer any financial penalties. Safety Officials Target Homes Still Without Power
Howard County leaders said they have new information to better identify neighborhoods in need of assistance.
First the first time, Howard County safety officials say they have specific information on neighborhoods still without power in the aftermath of a major storm. They will be using this information to send fire and safety officials to homes Wednesday evening that have been without power for the longest periods of time since Hurricane Sandy hit this week While the outages from Sandy are less widespread than those of recent storms, “the new data is still valuable,” said Howard County Executive Ken Ulman in a press release. As of Wednesday at 3:40 p.m., 3,534 Howard County residents were without power, according to BGE. Power has been restored to more than 34,000 households in Howard County, BGE is reporting. One school remains closed Wednesday.
Update Tuesday 6:30 a.m.: All Howard County Public Schools are open today except Bollman Bridge Elementary School, according to the Howard County School System. -- Original articke: Most Howard County Public Schools will open their doors to students Wednesday after two days of cancellations due to Hurricane Sandy, according to the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS). As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, 10 schools were still without power, according to a statement released by HCPSS. If the power is not on by 5 a.m., the following schools will remain closed: A list of schools that remain in the dark as of 5 a.m. Wednesday will be posted on the HCPSS website.
