A poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press reports that state and local government fare well as public opinion of federal government declines.
How do you feel about Howard County Government? Chances are that if you like a majority of those surveyed by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press then your answer is "pretty good." A poll released last month found that 63 percent of those surveyed looked favorably on their local governments. That percentage is roughly unchanged from last year when the group conducted a similar survey. State governments are enjoying similar public approval with 57 percent of those surveyed saying they look favorably upon their state governments—a five-point increase over last year. Meanwhile, public opinion of the federal government decreased by five points to 28 percent—the lowest point ever in a Pew poll, according to the center. The …

And You Say He's Just a Friend ... of Ken.
Who knew Ken Ulman was down? As in, you know, cool. A May 10 fundraising event for the county executive will feature rapper/dj Biz Markie. If you’re a parent, you may be familiar with his appearances on the music-heavy children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba. If you’re like me, the first thing you thought was: “Yooooou got what I need, but you say he’s just a friend, you say he’s just a friend …” from his 1989 top-ten hit, “Just a Friend.” According to Rachael Rice of Rice Consulting, which is handling Ulman’s fundraising, “the host of the event knew [Markie] and thought it would be fun.” The invitation, which Patch noticed on HoCo Rising, also lists Kevin Liles, former president of record label Def Jam Recordings, as a special guest. Def Jam …

Heads of government will discuss how their offices would be affected by the additional financial burden of teacher pension costs.
In a letter to employees two weeks ago, County Executive Ken Ulman said pay cuts and layoffs were in Howard County’s future if the governor’s plan to shift some of the cost of teacher pensions to the counties was instituted. This morning, heads of the county departments that would see those cuts will join Ulman at an event dubbed the “Stop the Shift” rally. According to a statement from the executive’s office, the leaders will talk about the programs that “could be on the budget ‘chopping block.’” The gathering is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the the Harper’s Choice Village Center Courtyard, 5485 Harpers Farm Road in Columbia. The governor's proposal for moving teacher pension costs from the state to the counties was the focus of a Feb. 21 hearing.
The Howard County Delegation heard from 36 people in Ellicott City on Tuesday on state and local issues. More than any other issue, citizens mentioned concern over Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to shift teacher pensions from the state to the county. County Executive Ken Ulman has opposed the proposal, and his constituents followed suit at the Feb. 21 hearing. Council Chair Mary Kay Sigaty testified on behalf of the council: "With county resources already stretched very thinly, this will be an obligation impossible to meet...We cannot absorb the additional cost of the pension shift without significantly impacting critical services that our residents need including police, the human services and public works." Here’s what the …
