Commencement ceremony dates wer announced later than usual due to Merriweather Post Pavilion's schedule.
The Howard County Public School System has announced its commencement schedule - a little later than usual. "Many parents have asked why the graduation schedule announcement was delayed this year," spokesperson Rebecca Amani-Dove wrote in a statement. Merriweather Post Pavilion, where all commencement ceremonies will be taking place, has provided use of its facility for more than two decades, Amani-Dove wrote. As part of an agreement, Merriweather can schedule concerts into early June until April 15. The Columbia 17-year-old who is accused of raping a 14-year-old student inside Wilde Lake High School was indicted on rape and assault charges by a Howard County grand jury this week. DeShawn Rasheed Jones, of the 6000 block of Laurel Wreath Way, was indicted as an adult on second-degree rape and second-degree assault charges after he allegedly raped the 14-year-old girl inside an unoccupied choir practice room at the school on Feb. 4, according to court records. The police report notes Jones tried to persuade the girl to go to a number of different rooms in the school, including the roof, before bringing her to the choir room. Attorney says evidence will show teen's innocence.
The attorney representing DeShawn Jones, the 17-year-old accused of raping a 14-year-old girl inside Wilde Lake High School earlier this month, said on Monday there is evidence that may prove his client's innocence. "Mr. Jones denies the allegations brought against him," said attorney Adam Frank in a statement released Monday. "He and his family would ask that you please refrain from any judgment until all of the facts are brought out during trial. The public must remember that there are two sides to every story and there will be evidence that will shed light on Mr. Jones's innocence." James LeMon said the school is continuing to improve safety procedures at the school after an alleged rape occurred inside the school on Monday.
The principal of Wilde Lake High School wrote in his second letter to parents in as many days that the school is evaluating safety procedures in the wake of an alleged rape reported at the school on Monday. Wilde Lake High principal James LeMon wrote that the school proactively addressed general concerns and provided individual support the day after police said a student was raped by another student inside the high school. Donnell Maurice Vannison, the man charged with second-degree assault in an incident at Long Reach High School that became a viral video, is scheduled to appear for trial in Howard County Friday. Vannison, 40, of Columbia, allegedly went to the high school wearing a ski mask, attempted to assault a student and subsequently was knocked out, police said in March.
