Police to Increase Presence on Route 29 Footbridge

The move comes after two robberies were reported on the bridge in less than a month.

Howard County Police said Friday they would increase patrols on the Route 29 footbridge in Town Center after two robberies were reported in less than a month on the bridge. A man was reportedly robbed while walking across the Route 29 footbridge around 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 by two suspects who asked the man for a cigarette, then stole his iPhone and wallet, according to police. Police reported there was no indication the suspects were armed. The alleged robbery happened less than a month after a woman reported her iPhone was stolen by three suspects on the footbridge around 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 20. Robbery on Route 29 Footbridge: Crime Roundup

Columbia Robbery For the second time in a month, a robbery has been reported on the footbridge over Route 29. Police say the victim was walking on the lakefront side when two people approached him, asking for a cigarette. Then, according to police, they stole the victim’s iPhone and wallet. They did not display or imply weapons. The suspects are described as: A man was getting his mail from a mailbox on the 10400 block of Fair Oaks Drive on Nov. 14 at about 6 p.m. when three people approached him, according to police. One of the men pointed a gun at the man’s head and demanded his wallet, police said. The victim complied and the three fled. Robbers Strike on Route 29 Footbridge: Crime Roundup

  Columbia: Howard County Police are looking for three suspects in connection with a robbery on the Route 29 footbridge who may also have been involved with an attempted break-in on Swift Stream Place. Just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, police were called to the 10300 block of Swift Stream Place for reports of men turning doorknobs along the hallway.  Police said a person reported hearing his doorknob turning and when he looked out of his door, he saw three suspects headed toward Little Pawtuxent Parkway About ten minutes later, police say two men approached a woman walking on the Route 29 footbridge Saturday at about 8:35 p.m. The men grabbed her purse, according to police, but when the woman did not let go, they reached into her pocket …

Bridge Columbia Dominates Budget Hearing

Is a new iconic structure the key to Columbia's future?

A community group that wants to replace the Columbia Bridge urged County Executive Ken Ulman at a budget hearing on Wednesday to consider using county money to replace the current bridge that spans U.S. 29 with a new larger one, according to Explore Howard. Bridge Columbia, the group pushing for a new bridge, wants to replace the current 28-year-old overpass—which accomodates only pedestians and bicycle traffic—with one that also will allow for bus traffic.  Among the complaints the group has with the current bridge is that it looks unsafe and that its enclosed design makes walkers feel trapped.
