The First Day of School in Howard County Will Be….

Howard County public school students and parents can now start planning for the 2013-14 first day of school.

The first day of school for Howard County public school students will be on Aug. 26, 2013, according to the recently approved 2013-14 Howard County public schools academic calendar. The school year will begin on Aug. 19 for teachers. The last day of school in Howard County for the 2012-13 school year is currently scheduled for June 20, according to the online calendar. For the 2013-14 academic year, winter break is scheduled for Dec. 23 through Jan. 1 and spring break is April 14-21. The last day of school for the next academic year is June 18, depending on how many of the five inclement weather days are used. Plenty of nervous smiles and shiny shoes walked to school for the first day.

Today is the first day of school for students in Howard County Public Schools, which means new shoes are strapped, pencils are sharpened and tears were shed–by nervous kids and reminiscent parents. Monday morning was in the mid-70s, so plenty of kids and parents walked to school for the first day. Nonetheless, traffic still got hectic in some spots. Have a picture from the first day of school? Howard County Public Schools Start Aug. 27

The end date is up in the air, based on weather.

For students in Howard County public schools, the school year begins Aug. 27. Howard County is one of 17 jurisdictions in the state of Maryland starting the 2012–2013 academic year the last Monday in August. Are your kids excited for school to start? Mixed feelings? This year, the school system has planned for inclement weather in its scheduling. Carl Jones Jr.'s First Day of Kindergarten

One boy's journey to his first day of kindergarten at Swansfield Elementary School.

For once, they were going to be on time. Christina Lucara and her son, Carl Jones Jr., had been up since 6:40 a.m., eager to get to Swansfield Elementary School for Carl’s first day of kindergarten. “I think you need to calm down,” Lucara warned as Carl ran around the room, too excited to sit still. She spread peanut butter over a piece of wheat bread and slapped another piece on top. “He used to like these with honey, but not anymore," she said. Carl finally sat on the couch, entranced by the Disney Channel characters singing about the days of the week. “I guess I should make myself a lunch, too,” Lucara said. Update: Howard County Schools Open Tuesday

Schools without power will not be open.

Updated: 4:57 p.m. Howard County school officials have announced that school will be open Tuesday, even as power hasn't been restored to all of its schools. As of 4 p.m., 12 county schools were without power. Any schools without power will be closed, and school officials are encouraging parents to watch the school's site for updated school information. Also, athletic practices will be held at all high schools tomorrow, even if the school is closed due to power outage. "We have games scheduled for Friday," says Athletics Coordinator Mike Williams in a press release. "We want to make sure all teams have adequate and equitable practice time." And today schools without power are closed. However a small suggestion, it really would be easier if the county school website listed the CLOSED schools. I have heard from many people who were confused at the method of posting. Crossing fingers that everyone can go to school tomorrow.   more ›

Howard County Library branches gave soon-to-be kindergartners the opportunity to experience a taste of school.

Howard County Libraries gave kindergartners a practice run for the big first day of school with the Kindergarten Here We Come! program during the past two weeks.
