Board of Education Candidates Vie for Three Seats in Tight Race

Find out about the six candidates running for seats on the Howard County Board of Education

On Monday, Patch spoke with candidates for Board of Education, perhaps the tightest race in Tuesday's election in Howard County . The six candidates are hoping to be one of three candidates who win seats. Voters select three candidates on the ballot. Here's more on each candidate, listed in alphabetical order:  Bob Ballinger Ballinger, of Ellicott City, said on Monday he was spending the last few hours before Tuesday’s election with good friends and making sure his signs are at the polls. County Republicans Looking for an Upset

Democrats comfortable, hoping for a strong turnout.

  At the Howard County Republican headquarters in Ellicott City on Monday, volunteers moved quickly around a nicely appointed office, bringing in yard signs, discussing issues. "We're looking for an upset, that's what we want," said O.P. Ditch, vice president of the Howard County Republican Club. On the other end of the political spectrum, at the Howard County Democratic Central Committee in Columbia, Michael McPherson, the chair of the committee, said he didn't anticipate any surprises on Tuesday. Board of Elections Ready for Big County Turnout

Director expects an 84 percent turnout for 2012 election in Howard County.

  The director of the Howard County Board of Elections advised residents to head to the polls in the afternoon on Tuesday to avoid long lines during an election in which big turnouts are expected. Guy C. Mickley, director of the board of elections, expects an 84 percent turnout among the county's 188,000 registered voters.  That compares to the 60.88 percent turnout Howard County saw in the 2010 gubernatorial general election, according to state election data. State turnout for that election was 54.02 percent. He added that about 16 pecent of the county voted during early voting this year and another 3 or 4 percent will vote absentee.   Here's a list of Columbia polling places for Tuesday's General Election. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. -- as long as you're in line at 8 p.m. you'll be able to cast your ballot. If you are not sure which polling place is yours, visit the Maryland State Board of Elections website where you can type in your address and find the correct location. Ulman to Cast Ballot For Giles, Siddiqui and Scott for School Board

County Executive Ken Ulman said he would vote Friday.

  Howard County Executive Ken Ulman wrote in a blog post Friday that he was going to vote for school board candidates Janet Siddiqui, Jackie Scott and Ellen Flynn Giles as part of early voting at the Florence Bain Center on Friday. "I have worked with both Ellen and Janet for a number of years, and I know how committed they are to ensuring our students receive a top-notch education," wrote Ulman on why he made the decision to support those three candidates in a competitive Howard County Board of Education race.   Howard County voters will have to pick three candidates from a field of six for Howard County Board of Education in November. Patch has posted an informal poll where voters can find more information about each candidate. Below, we've organized candidate endorsements from leading voices around the community. Report: Poll Shows Marylanders Support Same Sex Marriage

A newly released Washington Post poll shows residents favor upholding the same sex marriage law.

  A Washington Post poll found that 52 percent of likely Maryland voters would uphold the state law allowing same-sex marriages, while 43 percent would vote against upholding it. If approved, the law will go into effect next year. Same-sex marriage won a narrow legislative approval earlier this year, but opponents petitioned to have a referendum placed on the November ballot—Question 6. The Post poll, which telephoned 1,106 Maryland adults, found likely voters divided on the issue by race, region and political party: In September, Gonzales Research, an Annapolis polling firm, found similar results in its poll. The firm polled 813 registered voters across the state and found that 51 percent of likely voters would support Question 6, while …
