Residents make their feelings known in letters and comments.
The Inner Arbor Plan to develop Symphony Woods was revealed in January as a bold solution to creating an iconic park in a growing city, but many residents disagree with how it has been handled and the plan itself. Columbia Association's Board of Directors may vote on the plan as soon as its meeting on Thursday. The public meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Association building (10221 Wincopin Circle, Columbia). The agenda has alloted 45 minutes for public discussion, as well as 60 minutes for the Strategic Implementation Committee to discuss the plan. In a letter to the board, CA's president Phil Nelson recommended that the board should adopt the Inner Arbor Plan, set Symphony Woods as the preferred location for a new CA office …

The Board of Appeals is scheduled to hear testimony on the funeral home Tuesday night.
A contentious debate over whether to place a new funeral home on Route 108 in Clarksville is set to continue Tuesday night at a Board of Appeals hearing. A spokesperson for the Board of Appeals said Tuesday's hearing is likely to consist of testimony, with a decision highly unlikely. The issue has united a few residential communities in opposition to the funeral home that would be located on a three-acre wooded lot on Route 108, between St. Louis Catholic and Christ Lutheran Church. The residents argue the funeral home is a cultural, environmental and community issue, while the lawyer for the potential owner says the proposal meets all the requirements it needs to be approved. The debate between the residents and the owner, Jay Donaldson…

Debate viewers in Maryland had plenty to say about last week's debate.
Although there weren't any "You're no John Kennedy" quotes from this week's debate, many people on Patch and across the country had plenty to say about the first of three match-ups between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. From Big Bird to budget, here are what Patch readers said about the debate: "Why bother wasting valuable time watching two bought and paid for liars debate over what they they believe the voters want to hear? Both Obama and Romney have proven track records of saying one thing and doing something completely opposite of what they said they would do..." -- Shawn "Guess what, Obama didn't win the debate. He looked like a kid in school that didn't prepare for his test. This sure did show…

Believes gay marriage will affect the next generation.
Matt Birk, the starting center for the Baltimore Ravens and former player for the Minnesota Vikings, wrote an op-ed published this weekend in The Minneapolis Star Tribune that detailed the reasons why he is against gay marriage. In the op-ed, he wrote, “it is important to set the record straight about what the marriage debate is all about, and to clarify that not all NFL players think redefining marriage is a good thing.” Birk may have been referring to a controversy that ensued after a Maryland legislator wrote a letter to the Ravens’ ownership to silence Brendon Ayanbadejo, a linebacker for the team, after he came out in support of gay marriage. Birk wrote that he believes both a mother and a father play a vital role in raising a child…

Liquor Board delays decision after main owner, Chris O’Donnell, doesn't show.
The fate of a proposed liquor store to be located inside the new Columbia Wegmans is past the point of being under debate. It's now almost a saga. After three and half hours of testimony on Thursday evening, and five hours of testimony on May 1, the Howard County Alcoholic Beverage Board has again delayed a decision on whether to grant a license to sell alcohol in a space on the second-floor of the Columbia Wegmans. In May, the decision was delayed to allow members of the public to testify. On Thursday it was because Christopher O’Donnell was not present to testify. O’Donnell is the 90 percent owner of the proposed store and husband of Colleen Wegman, the president of Wegmans. After discovering that O’Donnell was out of the country, the …

Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and anti-death penalty advocate Kirk Bloodsworth share their opinions about efforts in Annapolis to repeal the state's capital punishment law.
Proposed legislation to repeal Maryland's death penalty is scheduled to be heard by state lawmakers in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee Wednesday afternoon in Annapolis. Before the hearing, supporters of repeal are set to hold an 11:30 a.m. press conference in the House Office Building with NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous and relatives of murder victims. The two bills pending in the Senate and House have 85 co-sponsors between them. Repeal advocates are expected to argue that years of death penalty appeals torment families of murder victims who otherwise would never hear from a defendant sentenced to life in prison. Patch caught up with Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger—who supports the death penalty—…
