Clyde's to Close in February for Renovations

Once renovations begin, the lakefront restaurant will be closed for eight weeks.

Clyde's of Columbia will close on Feb. 4 to begin $4 million in renovations and will be closed for eight weeks afterwards, according to Clyde's corporate offices. The popular lakefront restaurant announced in October it would be making improvements to the kitchen, bathrooms, decor and patio as part of the renovation process. The Tomato Palace will also be closed during renovations as it shares a kitchen with Clyde's, according to Tom Meyer, Clyde's president, who announced the renovations last year. At the time, Meyer said the restrooms at Clyde's were in "dire need" of renovations. He also said the kitchen would be expanded, the interior would be completely gutted and re-done and the restaurant plans to install a pergola on the patio. …

Whole Foods Entry into Downtown a 'Home Run'

Find out the effect on area property values and the famous architect who may be involved.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said Whole Foods’ entry into  Columbia is a symbol that the redevelopment of downtown is happening. “It’s real,” said Ulman, who called the agreement between the development company Howard Hughes and Whole Foods to lease the former Rouse building on the Columbia Lakefront a “home run” to kick off the development of downtown. “You could have had a moonwalk announced today and this would have been a bigger deal,” said John DeWolf, vice president of Howard Hughes, at an announcement of the agreement at the former Rouse building. DeWolf said Howard Hughes would be doing the base work to renovate the historic, iconic former Rouse Company headquarters. He said the work would take about a year and cost upwards …

Speak Out: What Establishments Would You Recommend for New Mall Addition?

At a meeting on Tuesday a representative of the mall developers said they would aggressively pursue retailers the community was interested in, if they could afford the market rates.

The plan to demolish the L.L. Bean store at the Mall in Columbia and replace it with a new 75,000 square feet addition is now in full swing. Officials from General Growth Properties outlined plans on Tuesday night that showed what the new addition would like—it would consist of three buildings with a large courtyard in the middle. To fill the new space, GGP is currently  negotiating with several retailers who GGP senior development director Jim Whitcome said, "had tremendous interest" in the new development. Whitcome also said that if residents would like to see a certain store be included in the new development, they should contact the mall's management and "we'll go aggressively at them." "We're generally driven by what the market …

Whole Foods To Locate in Downtown Columbia

Find out when the store is expected to open.

Whole Foods has signed a lease with Howard Hughes to open a store at the former Rouse Company Headquarters in Downtown Columbia. Store officials note the Columbia market will offer "the highest quality natural and organic products." The Whole Foods Market will occupy 45,000 square feet of the 151,000 square foot building on the level adjacent to the parking lot on Little Patuxent Parkway, according to a press release. "Opening in Columbia is an excellent opportunity for us to plant solid roots, encourage economic growth, job creation and community engagement," wrote Scott Allshouse, Mid-Atlantic region president for Whole Foods. The announcement of the entrance of Whole Foods into the Columbia market, first reported on the food blog …

A few years ago I would have been thrilled to think that Wholefoods was coming to Columbia (although I too question the lakefront location) -- but I am now so disgusted with the political statements of the WF CEO (comparing Obamacare to fascism) that I will not be able to shop there. I'll stick with MOMs and Davids and the organic section of the bigger stores.   more ›

New Restaurants, Stores For Mall Redevelopment

A representative for the Mall in Columbia developer said the planned outdoor addition to the mall has a 'tremendous amount of interest' from retailers.

Representatives from General Growth Properties said the redevelopment of the Mall in Columbia will create a new outdoor experience, filled with outdoor seating for new restaurants, new stores and a pedestrian connection to the Lakefront and the new Warfield area developments. However, they did not say who would be moving into the proposed addition of 43,500 square feet of retail space during a presentation Tuesday night at Howard Community College. "At this point we have a tremendous amount of interest from retailers," said Jim Whitcome, senior development director for GGP. "But until we complete negotiations, I can't let you know who they are." What restaurants do you think should come to the Mall in Columbia? Tell us in comments. A …

Report: Howard Hughes Negotiating with Whole Foods, Again

The development company is reportedly once again talking to the upscale grocery chain about leasing the Howard Hughes building.

The former Rouse Company headquarters is back in the news again. And again, it's about Howard Hughes trying to lure Whole Foods into the aging, iconic building. On Thursday, Howard Hughes senior vice president John DeWolf said before the Columbia Association board of directors that Howard Hughes was negotiating with a number of potential tenants for the Rouse building and mentioned Whole Foods as a possibility. However, the Howard County Times reported in March that negotiations between Whole Foods and Howard Hughes had stalled. The Howard County Times reported on Tuesday the building would need $25 million in renovations to be ready for a retail tenant. A Whole Foods spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. In …

The plan calls for an additional 43,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space to be added to the mall.

General Growth Properties' plan to add 43,500 square feet of new retail and restaurant space to the Mall in Columbia was approved unanimously by the Howard County Planning Board at their meeting on Thursday. The plan would create additional space for new tenants as well as a pedestrian connection to the Lakefront. The plan calls for the removal of 31,500 square feet of current space, which would include the L.L. Bean store, 63 parking spaces behind L.L. Bean and the Nordstrom Deck. Then the addition of 75,000 square feet of new restaurant and retail space would be added. James Whitcome, senior development director for GGP, said L.L Bean was interested in downsizing their facility and would move into a smaller store after the development is…
