Last Howard County Blockbuster to Close

The store in Columbia will close on April 7.

A big banner was draped over the windows in front of the Blockbuster video store on Dobbin Road in Columbia on Friday afternoon. It read "Store Closing." The location will officially close on April 7, according to sign posted inside the store, making it the last Blockbuster in Howard County to close. The last Ellicott City Blockbuster closed earlier this year. Inside the store on Friday, a customer who was returning rentals told one of the employees she thought the store was never going to close because it was so busy and the employee responded, "I guess they just picked us." As part of the closure, DVDs inside the store are priced at $9.99 or less and pre-used video games are selling between $10 - $40. Rentals are no longer available, …

Absolutely. Not everyone wants to have to pay the high premiums required to actually enjoy a movie that has to stream over the internet or upgrade their home router to handle that kinf of bandwidth. Also, this makes it all to easy to have your viewing habits tracked as if you were a lab rat. Wake up people, Big Brother isn't solely your government. Does anyone care that a blueray disk is the best…   more ›

L.L. Bean Store to Close in May

Store manager says they will not be renewing lease at the Mall in Columbia.

The L.L. Bean store at the Mall in Columbia will close on May 31, according to a store manager who spoke with Patch on Wednesday evening.  The manager said employees had been notified and that L.L. Bean wouldn’t be signing a new lease at a smaller location at the mall. The manager declined to give her name when asked. "L.L.Bean has been a valued tenant at The Mall in Columbia," said Katie Essing, the mall's general manager in a statement. "We never like to see a retailer leave our property; but when that situation arrives, it provides us with another opportunity to continue to provide great retail options to our shoppers." L.L. Bean had previously asked to downsize their location, which caused General Growth Properties, the mall’s …

SplashDown Replacement Discussions to Take Place

What should replace SplashDown? Tell us in comments.

Columbia Association has scheduled two public meetings to discuss replacing SplashDown and turning one of CA’s outdoor pools into a year-round indoor pool. SplashDown has been a source of problems for CA since at least 2007 when the interior of the tubes had to be re-caulked. In 2011 CA spent $84,000 making repairs to the water slides after structural issues were found in the stairs tower. Also, a recent engineering study noted that slides’ tubes need to be replaced, an expense that would cost the CA at least $250,000, according to CA’s Aquatics Master plan. In addition, the Master Plan notes that in 2011, general attendance of SplashDown amounted to 2,150 people and 419 birthday parties, a decline from 2007 when 5,000 people attended …

I can think of a number of reasons why attendance at Splashdown/Swim Center might be pretty low. One is that it was closed down long enough that a lot of people just got out of the mindset of going there, and that effect may gradually subside. Another is that WLVC is still a ghost town, although there's a plan in progress to change that. I'll describe some family-related reasons why I don't go …   more ›

Donna's in Columbia Closed Suddenly After 10 Years

"It was a big shock," says manager.

Donna's of Columbia closed over the weekend, ending a 10-year run at its location off Snowden River Parkway. The owners decided to close the restaurant after a dispute over the lease, according to Katie Houston, manager of the Columbia location. She said the owners told her on Friday that the restaurant would close on Sunday. "It was a big shock," said Houston. "That's an understatement." She said Donna's would not be reopening elsewhere in Columbia or Howard County. The restaurant opened 10 years ago this month, said Houston. The company, which also has two locations in Baltimore, announced the closing on its website with the following statement: No one answered when Patch called the business office on Monday morning. Local blog HowChow …
