The 2012 countywide crime statistics were released by Howard County Police on Tuesday.
Violent crimes in the county were down compared to last year, but burglaries rose slightly in the 2012 annual statistics released by Howard County Police on Tuesday. There were 574 incidents of violent crime—which includes homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault—in 2012 compared to 597 in 2011. Last year’s numbers were not the lowest in the last five years, in 2010 there were 558 violent crimes, but 2012’s numbers were much lower than 2008 and 2009 when there were more than 700 violent crimes both of those years. While property crime, which includes burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson was down as a category; burglaries were up from 2011. Police said four break-ins on Copperwood Way may be related.
Police said they are working to obtain the video of a possible serial burglar after the homeowner of a residence on Copperwood Way in King's Contrivance used an Internet home video camera to remotely observe someone breaking into his home. The homeowner used the remote view feature of the camera to watch someone break in through his basement window and rummage through bills and paperwork, according to police. The homeowner was alerted to the break in after a motion detector was set off, said police, but he didn't believe anything was taken. The break in was one of four that have been reported over the past four days in the 7000 block of Copperwood Way and police said they are investigating whether the incidents are related. The first …

A man already charged in a string of burglaries in Howard County faces more burglary charges after an investigation involving a stakeout, a helicopter search and DNA evidence, according to court records. Robert W. Stone, of the 10300 block of Daystar Court in Columbia, was indicted this week on burglary, car theft and other charges in connection with incidents in Columbia and Ellicott City. Stone is charged with stealing a minivan and an SUV in Ellicott City, as well as burglarizing residences on Dorsch Farm Road and Brampton Parkway in Ellicott City and Pemberton Court in Columbia. Jessup Commercial Burglary Someone threw a large rock through the front window glass of Kay’s Diner, entered the restaurant and stole a Nestle’s strawberry milk and some Snickers bars. The incident was discovered by an officer doing checks in the area around 9 p.m. on March 6 in the 8200 block of Preston Court. Residential Burglary Two citizens detained an Ellicott City man who had entered a home in the 8300 block of Barkwood Court through an open door. Columbia Residential Burglary A man returned to his home in the 10300 block of Painted Cup to find another man coming down his stairs with his wife’s jewelry box at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26. Upon seeing the homeowner, the man fled out a rear sliding door. Police reported a rear kitchen window was pried open to gain entry. One 13-year-old, two 14-year-olds and a 17-year-old are believed to be involved with a string of burglaries that began in November, police said.
Four Columbia teens were charged this week in a string of 16 commercial burglaries at Howard County businesses, including a recent jewelry store burglary in which a neighboring business had its wall sledgehammered to gain entry. Of those charged, one is 13-years-old, two are 14, and one is 17, according to police. Police said the juveniles colluded with Charles Rodriguez, a 24-year-old Columbia man, who was charged with selling their stolen merchandise after one of the incidents. Police said a man believed to be involved in a string of Ellicott City cat burglaries was arrested after attempting to hide in a dumpster on Tamar Drive in Columbia.
Police said a man suspected in a string of Ellicott City cat burglaries was arrested this week hiding in a dumpster on Tamar Drive in Columbia as he attempted to flee the scene of a burglary. Cornelius Antonio McRae, 23, of Baltimore, was charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft and assault, police said. Police said they spotted McRae near the 8100 block of Tamar Drive on Jan. 6, near the site of a burglary that had just been committed. Police said they were in the area after they had located an unoccupied stolen 2013 silver Honda Pilot, which they determined McRae had been driving. Howard County Police have released the mugshots of the two suspects wanted in a string of door kick-in burglaries throughout Howard County. Joseph Leo Baumgarten, of Pasadena, and Dianna Marketti, of Dundalk, were arrested on Oct. 4 after police said they tracked them down through a set of stolen Batlimore Ravens tickets. The two were charged with 25 counts each related to four daytime door kick-in burglaries and suspected in ten other burglaries that occurred in September, according to police. However, a court commissioner, Oreon W. Pinkston II, set the bail for Marketti and Baumgarten at $15,000 on Oct. 5 and both posted it that day. The day after two suspected burglars were arrested and accused of of stealing more than $22,000 in firearms, jewelry and electronics from at least four Howard County residences, they were released on $15,000 bail, court officials said this week. Howard County prosecutors said they tried to increase the bond, but without success. “I don’t believe $15,000 would be the first number that came to mind,” said Natasha M.
