The move comes after two robberies were reported on the bridge in less than a month.
Howard County Police said Friday they would increase patrols on the Route 29 footbridge in Town Center after two robberies were reported in less than a month on the bridge. A man was reportedly robbed while walking across the Route 29 footbridge around 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 by two suspects who asked the man for a cigarette, then stole his iPhone and wallet, according to police. Police reported there was no indication the suspects were armed. The alleged robbery happened less than a month after a woman reported her iPhone was stolen by three suspects on the footbridge around 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 20. Tell us in comments: Do you support the idea of a new bridge to connect Oakland Mills to downtown Columbia?
Proponents of Bridge Columbia will have to overcome the latest setback in their efforts to build a new bridge over Route 29 that would connect Oakland Mills and downtown Columbia. According to Explore Howard, the development company Howard Hughes found that a new bridge wouldn't be used enough to warrant its expense, according to testimony in front of the County Council by John Powell, office of transportation administrator in Howard County. Do you support the bridge, or do you think the cost outweighs the benefits? - Tell us in the comments. Howard Hughes wouldn't comment on the study because it has not been approved by the county, according to Explore Howard. Bridge Columbia, the group pushing for a new bridge, estimated the cost of a …

The funds would pay for a feasibility study and initial construction on a new Route 29 bridge.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman proposed $600,000 for a bridge across Route 29 connecting downtown Columbia to Oakland Mills as part of his $175.3 million capital budget proposal for fiscal year 2013. The proposal came after residents lobbied for $200,000 to $300,000 for a feasibility study to build the bridge last month. Bridge Columbia, a residents’ activist group, set up a website last year to promote building a new bridge over Route 29 that would be more aesthetically pleasing and allow for bus travel over the bridge. The current bridge accommodates pedestrians and bikers, but has been a target of vandals and criticized for the chain-link fencing that encloses it. At the budget proposal hearing, Ulman said there was a need for a …

Advocates for the village center want more connection with downtown Columbia.
Probably no Columbia village center has prepped for a rebirth more than Oakland Mills, a place advocates say could stand to benefit from two major changes to its landscape: a new park opening this spring and a proposed bridge that would link the village to Columbia’s core. The first 25 acres of Columbia’s Blandair Park, located on a 300-acre parcel of land on both sides of Route 175, between Route 29 and Interstate-95, will be open for the public on March 17. And village advocates are closely watching the discussions surrounding Bridge Columbia, which would replace a deteriorating footbridge that now crosses U.S. 29 from Oakland Mills to Town Center. If approved, advocates said it would create a better connection to Town Center, the …

Is a new iconic structure the key to Columbia's future?
A community group that wants to replace the Columbia Bridge urged County Executive Ken Ulman at a budget hearing on Wednesday to consider using county money to replace the current bridge that spans U.S. 29 with a new larger one, according to Explore Howard. Bridge Columbia, the group pushing for a new bridge, wants to replace the current 28-year-old overpass—which accomodates only pedestians and bicycle traffic—with one that also will allow for bus traffic. Among the complaints the group has with the current bridge is that it looks unsafe and that its enclosed design makes walkers feel trapped. A new bridge is expected to cost between $10 million and $15 million, according to proponents, and they suggest that 80 percent of the cost could …

Do you think the U.S. 29 bridge needs to be overhauled?
A group of residents is advocating for a new bridge to replace what its members say is the unsafe 28-year-old structure extending over U.S. 29 between the Town Center and Oakland Mills villages. Bridge Columbia, which recently launched a website documenting its efforts, wants the current pedestrian bridge over U.S. 29 to be replaced with one wide and open enough to accommodate buses, pedestrians and cyclists. The group also has a Facebook page. The bridge would connect the east and west sides of Columbia, linking Howard Community College, Howard County General Hospital and the Town Center to the Oakland Mills Village Center and Blandair Park, advocates say. The group’s website said the current bridge looks unsafe and its enclosed design …

Blogger and educator Julia McCready shares her Christmas wishes for Columbia.
To me, Christmas in Columbia means going to the Symphony of Lights with my whole family. That’s when the holiday season officially begins. So, this year, like Barbara Kellner of the Columbia Archives, I started thinking about my HocoLocal wish list. 5. For me: I would like a tour of Elkridge from someone who loves it and knows it well. (I’ll pay for gas and snacks.) This is definitely an area where I need to learn more and think more. Any takers? 4. For my village, Oakland Mills: a very special Bridge to connect us to downtown, and span the separation between east and west over Route 29. 3. For the Howard County Public Schools: a healthy variety of truly viable school board candidates and a simple, functional way to have an election. Oh, …
