This weekend is looking good—great, even—with warm, sunny days and cool, sweater-weather nights. According to the National Weather Service, Friday will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 80s. There is a slight chance of rain Friday night, when temperatures will drop the mid 50s. Saturday will also be sunny with a high temperature in the mid 70s, dropping to the mid 50s at night. Saturday's temps will make for wonderful conditions for Columbia Association's BikeAbout. Have bike, will learn? If that's true for you, then this Saturday's BikeAbout provides a perfect opportunity to cruise around Columbia learning about the past, present and future of the dream city. The free annual event will take residents on a 13-mile self-guided tour through parts of Oakland Mills, Long Reach and Town Center. "It's just a lovely ride through some of the beautiful areas in Columbia," said Barbara Hurewitz Kellner, director of the Columbia Archives and an organizer of the BikeAbout. The historic building in Columbia is rarely open.
The Columbia Association is giving residents the rare opportunity to step inside a 19th century stone building on Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Woodlawn Slave Quarters, located off of Bendix Road, is believed to have been built in the early 1800s, according to the CA. In 2007, it was purchased by the CA, which has undertaken restoration efforts. "This building is a historical site that Columbia Association sought to restore and continues to protect," wrote CA spokesperson David Greisman in an email. "It is not kept open at all times in order to protect it from possible vandalism and misuse."
