Howard County Volunteer Receives State Recognition for Service

Lisa Schlossnagle has won the ‘Golden Apple’ award for her work in the schools and community.

Howard County parent volunteer and blogger Lisa Schlossnagle has been recognized for her work volunteering in Howard County schools. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot recently visited Fulton Elementary School to present Schlossnagle his Golden Apple award, which recognizes volunteering to benefit education in the state. The award was given to one recipient in each Maryland county, according to a Howard County schools release. Schlossnagle is in her third year of volunteering at Fulton Elementary School, Howard County school officials said. Her work includes mentoring with A-OK (Assist Our Kids), being a Fulton Elementary PTA Council delegate (she represents the school’s PTA at PTA Council meetings) and starting a computer science club …

Downtown Columbia Plan Wins Fourth Planning Award

The plan has been honored four times since September 2012.

The Downtown Columbia Plan is continuing to rake in the awards. The county announced on Wednesday the plan has received its fourth planning award since September of 2012. The latest is the Award of Excellence from the American Planning Association's County Planning Division and the National Association of County Planners in the special area planning category. Columbia's plan was chosen as part of the groups' annual meeting, where they highlight achievements in city planning. The Downtown Columbia Plan previously garnered awards from the International Downtown Association, The American Planning Association (Maryland-Delaware Chapter) and the Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission. Downtown Columbia Wins Second Planning Award

This time the plan won the Planner's Choice Award at a conference for the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association.

  The Downtown Columbia Plan received its second award in less than a month for the plan's vision and collaborative planning efforts to revitalize Downtown Columbia. The planner's choice award in the great planning category was awarded to the Downtown Columbia Plan by the MD chapter of the American Planning Association at its regional conference held last week. "This recognition illustrates how The Downtown Columbia Master Plan, and the entire planning process, embodies many of the core principles that will lead to creating a community of lasting value," said County Executive Ken Ulman, in a statement. Ball Receives 'Schaefer Helping People' Award

"I'm humbled and honored," said Ball, who was recognized for his work assisting local residents and increasing community pride.

Howard County Council Member Calvin Ball was awarded the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award Wednesday in Ellicott City. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot presented the award to Ball for his work assisting local residents, enhancing opportunities and increasing community pride. “I’m humbled and honored," said Ball. "It’s particularly fulfilling to receive an award that reflects what we should all really be involved in doing and that’s actually helping people.” The awards were created in honor of William Donald Schaefer, who died in April of 2011. Schaefer previously served as the mayor of Baltimore (1971-1987), governor of Maryland (1987-1995) and state comptroller from (1999-2007).  Ball’s recent work includes teaming up with …
