Major Delays Expected Sunday from Athleta Iron Girl Triathlon

Drivers should expect delays at several intersections around Centennial Park.

Drivers near Centennial Park on Sunday morning can expect to share the road with some 2,000 triathletes during the Athleta Iron Girl Triathlon. From 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Route 108 will be closed to westbound traffic between Ten Mills Road and Centennial Lane, according to a statement from the Howard County Police Department. Police officer will be directing traffic and temporarily closing roads to maintain biker safety during the race, and the department says delays can be expected on the following roads: Police say triathlon participants will be given the right of way, and they recommend motorists to plan alternative routes or give extra time if driving in the area is necessary. Sometimes a new sport just isn’t "as easy as riding a bike." Fortunately there are people willing to help.

How many people does it take to learn to ride a bike? Well, the last time I learned to ride, it took three. I say “the last time” because I managed to forget everything from the first time I learned, when I was five or six years old, and still possessed the ability to bounce off concrete unharmed. That’s the only explanation for the lack of fear that let me jump curbs, bicycle with no hands and careen at breakneck speed down the huge hill in front of my family’s house.  Nineteen years later and three weeks before my first triathlon (an event that features successive swim, bike and run distances), those heady, fearless cycling days of youth were a distant memory. I had my shiny road bike in hand and a severe case of uncertainty about the …
