Columbia Man Sentenced to 11 Years for Secretly Recording Ellicott City Women

Michael McKenny pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Howard County Circuit Court.

  A Columbia man pleaded guilty Tuesday to secretly videotaping two women inside their Ellicott City condominium and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Police arrested Michael Stephen McKenny in October of 2012 after investigating a hidden camera found inside a Montgomery Run Road condo in Ellicott City. The investigation began in September when a 29-year-old Ellicott City woman told police she found a hidden camera in her bedroom that was focused on her bathroom. According to charging documents, the camera, which began recording when it detected movement, secretly recorded the 29-year-old and a 30-year-old roommate in their bedrooms and bathrooms. Police: Surveillance Footage Leads to Arrest in Snowden Gas Station Robbery

The man was seen on surveillance video buying cigarettes the day before he allegedly robbed the store with his face covered.

  Police charged a 31-year-old man with armed robbery of a Snowden Exxon after a store clerk recognized the man as a customer from the day before. Cedric Ryan Murphy, who has no fixed address, was charged in the robbery. Police said a clerk at the gas station recognized the man who robbed him, even though his face was partially covered with a bandanna, as the same man who bought a pack of Newport cigarettes the day before. The man was wearing the same clothes on both days, according to police, who reviewed security footage from the incident. During the robbery, the man threatened the clerk with a knife and stole two to three cartons of Newport cigarettes and cash, said police. The robbery occurred Jan. 19. Police: Arson Suspect Arrested Saturday

A 25-year-old Columbia man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting fire to a building on Harpers Farm Road in Columbia.

Howard County Police charged a 25-year-old Columbia man with assault and malicious burning after he allegedly set fire to an apartment on Harpers Farm Road Friday night while police were investigating an assault. Police arrested Alejandro Adolfo Rodriguez, of the 5300 block of Harpers Farm Road, around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday after officers searching for him saw him walking on Eliots Oak Road in Columbia. He was arrested without incident, according to police. Police said when they arrived at the Harpers Farm Road residence Friday to investigate a reported assault, Rodriguez yelled obscenities at officers from a second-story window. Police: Facebook Post Leads to Arrest in Stolen Credit Card Shopping Spree

The two charged were identified after police posted their pictures on Facebook.

Pictures posted to the Howard County Police Department’s Facebook page led to the arrests of two people who police say stole credit cards and used them around town, according to a statement.  Stephanie Nicole Stuart, 25, of Essex and Craig Kenneth England, 40, of Catonsville, face multiple counts of theft and credit card fraud after two cards were reported stolen on Feb. 8 from an employee at the Johns Hopkins Medical Building in Columbia, police said. During the investigation, police said they determined that credit cards had been used later that day in stores in Ellicott City and Columbia, including at Target, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Office Depot, Game Stop and Advanced Auto Parts. Oakland Mills High Principal Responds to Students' Arrest

Principal Frank V. Eastham Jr. wrote about the announcement that four Oakland Mills High students had been arrested for attempted murder.

Principal Frank V. Eastham Jr. said Oakland Mills High has taken measures to ensure the school is not disrupted by Tuesday's announcement that four students were arrested and charged with the attempted murder of a cab driver. In a letter to parents, he wrote that "maintaining a safe and orderly school environment is of the highest priority." The four students who are charged in relation to a March 1 incident, in which they reportedly attempted to rob a cab driver, were arrested last week, according to police. The alleged crime occurred sometime around 10:45 p.m., said police. Police: Man Arrested in Mall Indecent Exposure Cases

Police said a Burtonsville man exposed himself twice inside the Mall in Columbia.

Howard County police said they arrested and charged a Burtonsville man in two reported incidents of indecent exposure at the Mall in Columbia after a mall employee spotted the man exposing himself in the food court on Wednesday night. Police said the mall employee saw the man, identified as Steven Michael Lerer, 49, of Burtonsville, standing near the food court with a jacket covering his genital area. When the man turned, the employee saw the man fondling himself and exposing his genitals, said police. The employee reported the man to mall security, who held him until police arrived, police said. Suspected Door Kick-in Burglars Held Without Bond

The two suspects in a string of door kick-in burglaries were arrested in Florida, after skipping a bail hearing in November.

  The man and woman suspected in a string of daytime door kick-in burglaries in Howard County have been arraigned in Circuit Court and are being held without bail. Joseph Leo Baumgarten, of Pasadena, and Dianna Lynn Marketti, who is listed in court documents at addresses in Dundalk and Glen Burnie, were extradited to Howard County last month after being arrested in Bay County, FL. The two were wanted by the Howard County's Sheriff's office for almost two months after skipping a bail hearing on Nov. 15. Baumgarten was arraigned in Howard County Circuit Court on Thursday, according to court records. He faces 25 charges in the string of burglaries in late September. 13-Year-Old Among Those Charged in Serial Howard County Burglaries

One 13-year-old, two 14-year-olds and a 17-year-old are believed to be involved with a string of burglaries that began in November, police said.

  Four Columbia teens were charged this week in a string of 16 commercial burglaries at Howard County businesses, including a recent jewelry store burglary in which a neighboring business had its wall sledgehammered to gain entry. Of those charged, one is 13-years-old, two are 14, and one is 17, according to police. Police said the juveniles colluded with Charles Rodriguez, a 24-year-old Columbia man, who was charged with selling their stolen merchandise after one of the incidents. The two suspects wanted in connection with a string of daytime door kick-in burglaries throughout Howard County were recently arrested in Bay County, Florida. Jopseh Leo Baumgarten and Dianna Lynn Marketti have been wanted by the Howard County Sheriff’s Office since they skipped a bail hearing on Nov. 15.  Marketti was arrested on an outstanding warrant after police responded to a verbal altercation between her and Baumgarten on Christmas, according to Springfield, FL Police. That day, Baumgarten fled the scene, said Springfield police, but he was later picked up on an outstanding warrant on Jan. 3 and charged with resisting an officer and providing a false name. 6,000 Packs of Cigarettes Confiscated in Howard County

Police catch motorist allegedly transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes on I-95 South near MD 175.

  Agents from the Comptroller's office confiscated 6,000 packs of alleged contraband cigarettes from a motorist on I-95 South near MD 175 in Howard County on Tuesday. The motorist, El-Housseni Hassan, 23, was spotted by a state police officer carrying a large amount of cigarettes during a routine traffic stop, according to a statement released by the comptroller's office. The officer called the comptroller's office, which had agents respond to the scene to confiscate the cigarettes, officials said. They are valued at nearly $40,000, according to the statement. Hassan, of Brooklyn, NY, was charged with transporting contraband cigarettes and possession of contraband cigarettes in the state of MD, according to the statement. He faces fines up…
