School Board Challengers Snag Education Association Endorsement

The endorsements show the educators association's frustration with the current make up of the board.

The Howard County Education Association, which represents more than 5,000 teachers and school staff in the county, has endorsed three non-incumbents—Ann DeLacy, David Gertler and Jackie Scott for the county board of education. “We need change on the Board of Education,” said HCEA President Paul Lemle in an interview. “These are by far the most educated, best prepared, ready-to-serve candidates.” In a statement released by the HCEA, Lemle said, “The current members hold each other in contempt. This dichotomy is an inherent contradiction; the two states cannot coexist.” The association, which is the exclusive representative of teachers in Howard County for collective bargaining, endorsed incumbents Janet Siddiqui, Ellen Flynn Giles and Allen…

To have the hcpss tell you corporal punishment is legal may disturb a parent. Fourteen challengers made their case for the three open seats on the Howard County Board of Education at a candidate forum on Monday night. Patch's live-blog of the event is available here. Four Candidates File for Three School Board Seats, Deadline Looms

As of Jan. 5, two incumbents and two challengers have filed to run for the three seats up for grabs.

With the deadline just days away, two incumbents and two challengers have officially filed their candidacies to run for the Howard County Board of Education. One incumbent said he plans to file Friday. Incumbents Ellen Flynn Giles and Janet Siddiqui are running to retain their seats and incumbent Allen Dyer said Thursday he would file his candidacy paperwork Friday. Hanover/Elkridge community activist Leslie Kornreich and longtime educator Ann DeLacy are the only two challengers to date, according to the Howard County Board of Elections website.
