Final arguments in the Howard County school board's case against Dyer are scheduled for Wednesday.
Testimony continued Friday after a judge Wednesday denied a motion to dismiss the charges in the hearing to remove Allen Dyer from the Howard County Board of Education, the Howard County Times reported. The Baltimore Sun reported that during Wednesday’s testimony, Dyer responded to individual accusations laid out in the complaint, filed by the Board of Education in June of 2011, which sought to have Dyer removed by the state from his position on the Board. Included in the accusations were charges that Dyer had breached confidentiality rules and that his repeated lawsuits against the Board had made it difficult for the Board to function. The suit also alleged that he used his position to “threaten, bully or embarrass other members of the …

Dyer, known for suing the Board, is now suing individual members.
Allen Dyer is headed back to court. According to the Baltimore Sun, Dyer had four members of the Howard County Board of Education, on which he sits, served with a civil complaint just before recess at Tuesday evening’s board meeting.. According to court records the complaints -- against Frank Aquino, Sandra French, Ellen Flynn Giles and Janet Siddiqui – were filed with the Circuit Court on May 9. Dyer told the Sun that he waited nearly two weeks to have them served because it was convenient having all four together at once. The complaint accuses the four of violating Open Meetings Act requirements in sevaral instances during the search for a new superintendent, according to the Sun. Dyer has made what some have called a career of suing …

"It's still not entirely clear exactly what the [school] board relied on" when voting to remove its own member Allen Dyer, said judge, after hearing five days of testimony.
An administrative judge will consider dropping the Howard County Board of Education's request to remove board member Allen Dyer from his seat because the charges were unclear, the Howard County Times reported. At Tuesday's hearing, the fifth day of testimony, Administrative Law Judge Douglas Koteen said he would consider a second appeal by Dyer to have the charges dismissed. Koteen had denied a previous request to dismiss the charge. The Board of Education in June asked the State Board of Education to remove Dyer from his position, accusing him of breaching confidentiality provisions, undermining the board and using his position to "further his personal litigation against the Board of Education,” among other allegations. In his May 15 …

Allen Dyer said impeachment was a result of him doing his job. And he's proud of that.
The votes are in, the cards tallied and the six finalists in the race for Board of Education (BOE) have been selected. Two of the three incumbents on the primary ballot – Janet Siddiqui and Ellen Giles – will go on to the general election where they will contend with Ann De Lacy, Jackie Scott, David Gertler and Bob Ballinger for three open BOE seats. Missing from November’s ballot will be Allen Dyer, a current BOE member who has been called everything from a “bully” and “drain on resources” to “a true advocate for the children.” In June the board passed a resolution asking the State Board of Education to remove Dyer from his seat on the board, citing misconduct and the repeated legal suits he has brought against the board in which he …

Two incumbents revealed information about process of selecting the school system's new leader.
Some candidates running for the three open seats on Howard County's school board said the Board of Education lacked openness in its decision this week to select Renee Foose, deputy superintendent in Baltimore County, as the new superintendent of Howard County schools. That contention was supported by at least one member of the current school board. “I am very pleased with the candidate we ended up with,” said incumbent Allen Dyer. “However, the process was fatally flawed." School board candidate Ann De Lacy agreed during a forum hosted by the Greater Elkridge Community Association on Wednesday. "I do have a problem with the transparency," she said. De Lacy and some of the 12 other school board candidates at the forum expressed concern …

You know about his lawsuits, but how does his fighter pilot experience color his outlook on life?
Allen Dyer’s outlook on life—and the Board of Education—has been shaped by his experience as a fighter pilot. By his role in the microcomputer revolution. And by haggis. Dyer, 64, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1968 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for his time as a fighter pilot in Vietnam. “When someone’s shooting at you, you’ve got to respond promptly and you’ve got to make sure you make the right decision,” he said during an interview with Patch. The flip side is that now, with no enemy planes in sight--at least literally--he has the luxury to debate. During his tenure on the school board, which began in 2008 after four failed campaigns, Dyer has taken advantage of that luxury. Some board …

The School Board opposes Vaillancourt's request to be a part of the Dyer removal hearing.
The Howard County School Board has objected to board member Cynthia Vaillancourt’s request to take part in a hearing that may decide whether Allen Dyer will be ousted from his position as a school board member. “One of the things that is problematic to me,” Vaillancourt said in an interview, “is that I don’t actually know what the things are that Mr. Dyer has supposedly done.” On June 9, the school board passed a resolution asking the State Board of Education to remove Dyer, from his seat, charging that he had “repeatedly breached confidentiality provisions that he is obligated, either legally or ethically, to preserve as a member of the Board of Education; acted in ways that undermined the functioning of the Board of Education;” and “…

School board member Allen Dyer requests a hearing with the state.
If Allen Dyer is ousted from the Howard County School Board, it won’t be without a fight. “The gloves are off,” Dyer said in an interview. “Very clearly the gloves are off and I am a red-blooded American. If somebody punches me, I punch back." On June 9, the school board passed a resolution agreeing to send a letter to the State Board of Education asking it to remove Dyer from his seat. The resolution said Dyer had acted unilaterally, spurned less contentious methods of mediation in favor of court and breached confidentiality rules. On June 24, School Board Chairperson Janet Siddiqui sent a letter to the State Board of Education. The letter was not approved by a vote of the school board and in it were allegations that were not in the …
