Boys' Basketball: River Hill Survives Early and Late Scares, Defeats Wilde Lake

Jordan Knisley gets injured while doing layup lines, but River Hill manages to hold off Wilde Lake, 57-45.

The River Hill Hawks had their first scare Saturday just before the game started, when Jordan Knisley, a senior forward and their team captain, went down with a knee injury during the pre-game warm-ups. The Hawks had another scare just before the game ended, when Wilde Lake rallied back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter and was just a couple of baskets away from tying the score. But in-between those scares, the game belonged to River Hill. And the game belonged to River Hill once it was over, with the Hawks coming out with a 57-45 victory. Knisley had helped the Hawks in their last three games. He would have to watch Saturday’s matinee event from the bench. As early as the first quarter, it was evident that River Hill had …

Boys' Basketball: River Hill Surges In Second Half, Beats Long Reach

In game with a 10-7 halftime score, River Hill, down three at the half, scored 30 in the second half to take the victory.

Long Reach is not a school that can get into a shootout with the top teams in Howard County. They have to play a tough style of defense to try and stay in the game. It worked in the first half of Friday night’s game. The Long Reach Lightning, with just one win on the season, clung to a 10-7 halftime lead. It didn't last. River Hill (11-6) broke through with 30 points in the second half, a surge that led them to the 37-25 victory. Long Reach still had the game under control with about three minutes to play in the third quarter, up 19-16.   But then the River Hill Hawks mounted a nine-point run capped by two three-pointers from senior Jordan Kinsley and never looked back. “We just don’t have three-point [shooters]. We get behind, we have …

Boys’ Basketball: Oakland Mills Scorpions Remain Undefeated, Crush River Hill

The Oakland Mills High School Scorpions improve to 14-0, but they find themselves without one of their leading scorers for the rest of the season.

As the saying goes, winning heals all wounds. The Oakland Mills Scorpions were hoping that old cliché was right – as they were recently hurt by the abrupt departure of one of their own. On Friday night the Scorpions found themselves without the player that Coach Jon Browne once called the team’s “emotional leader,” Kerry Bethea, who left the team earlier this week. “He had issues Wednesday at the Wilde Lake game and he decided that he couldn’t do this anymore,” Browne said. “It was his decision.” As a result, Oakland Mills unveiled their new-look Scorpions against one of the top teams in Howard County, the 8-5 River Hill Hawks. But Browne was confident in his team’s ability to overcome adversity. “I am not concerned about who we were,” …

Boys' Basketball: Centennial Forces Turnovers, Runs Away With Win Over River Hill

Keonte Potts led the Centennial High School Eagles with 21 points and seven steals.

While it wouldn't be wholly accurate to say that the Centennial Eagles stole a victory over the River Hill Hawks – after all, they won by 19 points – it would nevertheless be an apt description for how the Eagles won the game. Centennial's defense forced numerous River Hill turnovers, led especially by the play of Keonte Potts, who stole the ball seven times. Those seven flashy steals all led to uncontested layups, a metaphor for Wednesday's final result – Centennial ran away with the game, winning 63-44. It was the third straight loss for the home-team Hawks, who fell to 7-4. The Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 6-4. Basketball is a game of momentum, which can take place both within an individual game and over the course of a season. River …

Boys' Basketball: Defense Wins It For River Hill Against Reservoir

The River Hill High School Hawks improved to 5-1 with their 54-48 victory over the Reservoir High School Gators.

Every year – with the exception of maybe this year – the Baltimore Ravens have lived by it. Coaches in any sport will swear by it. It is the axiom: "Defense wins games." It is already accepted as true in theory. On Monday it was once again shown to be true in practice, with River Hill's defense prevailing against Reservoir's defense, giving the Hawks the 54-48 victory over the Gators.  "Defense is our bread and butter," said Matthew Graves, River Hill's coach. It needed to be in Monday's game. The Hawks did not shoot particularly well. They simply played solid, fundamental defense. That's how it's been in Graves' six years heading the Hawks. His teams have played a mixed bag of defenses, with the coach preaching to each team that tough …
