The Scorpions won the battle of second-place teams.
After losing their first two games, the Howard Lions had rebounded by winning 12 straight. And then they met the Oakland Mills Scorpions. For the Lions, the 46-36 loss to Oakland Mills on Friday would bring their streak to an end. For the Scorpions, however, this win – their eighth-straight – would give them sole claim to second place in the Howard County standings. “This game was really important.” Oakland Mills’ Jasmine Hill said after the game. “It meant so much because we were tied for second place.” Not anymore. Howard, 12-3 on the season, fell to 9-3 in county play. Oakland Mills, 12-3 on the season, improved to 10-2 against other county teams. The Howard High Lions extended their winning streak to eight, defeating the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs, 63-30.
The Howard High School Lions put their seven-game winning streak on the line Wednesday, traveling to Marriotts Ridge High School to face the Mustangs. The winning streak never seemed on the line – the Lions took care of business as usual, winning their eighth straight, this one by a score of 63-30. The Mustangs were completely outmatched all night on both ends, giving up big runs to the Lions as well as struggling from the field. The first quarter featured excellent offense from Howard, with their first five field goals all coming off assists. “I thought we were very unselfish,” said Howard Coach Scott Robinson. “I think they really shared the ball well.” Down 16-4 after one quarters, the Mustangs needed a good second quarter to get back …

Long Reach's Imani Sanders put on an impressive individual show, scoring 17 points, but her Lightning failed to keep up with the Lions' all-around team effort.
With offensive maturity and defensive fervor, the Howard Lions improved to 5-2 Wednesday night against the Long Reach Lightning, doing so in convincing fashion from the tip-off to the final whistle. The Lions took the lead early in the first quarter and held onto it. By the end of the third quarter, the Lions were able to give their starters some well-deserved rest as the team coasted to a 51-27 victory. "The first half was the best we played all year," said coach Scott Robinson. The Lions did all the things that great teams do: They dominated the glass, made defensive stops, and pushed the ball efficiently. "We played with a lot of intensity, handled the ball really well, and, defensively, we really got after it," Robinson said. The …

The Lions handed the Raiders their first loss of the young season in the form of a 32-point beatdown.
The Howard Lions, 1-2 underdogs against the 4-0 Atholton Raiders, had gotten off to a slow start offensively, scoring just five points in the game's opening quarter. And then they found their rhythm. The Lions would go on to outscore Atholton in each of the last three quarters – by 14 points in the second quarter, 12 in the third, and nine in the fourth. And their offensive explosion coincided with extremely effective defense, pushing them past the Raiders by an astonishing 32 points for a final score of 51-19. "It is just big to get it to 32," said Howard head coach Scott Robinson. "We just happened to have a good night in that way." But despite the big win for the Lions, the offense started off slowly, hitting just two field goals in …
