A Columbia man was sentenced at Howard County Circuit Court Friday to 18 months in jail for his involvement in a collision that resulted in the death of a Marriotts Ridge High School educator in 2012. Richie Junior Burgess, 42, of the 1200 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, pleaded guilty two months ago to manslaughter. Police said Burgess' blood tested positive for the prescription medication Xanax at the time of the crash. The accident, which happened on Feb. 21, 2012; on eastbound MD Route 32 at the Route 29 interchange, critically injured Mary Ann Levant, 64, a long-time staff member of the Howard County Public School System. A Columbia man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Howard County Circuit Court last week for his involvement in a fatal auto accident last February. Richie Junior Burgess, 42, of the 12000 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, pleaded guilty to criminal negligent manslaught by motor vehicle in an accident that resulted in the death of Mary Ann Levant, 64, a staff member at Marriotts Ridge High School, according to a state's attorney's office spokesperson. The owner of a Catonsville landscaping company who was cutting down a tree in Clarksville fell to his death along with part of the tree Tuesday, according to Howard County Police. Police found Michael Joseph Dingle, 40, unconscious and not breathing when they responded to the 8500 block of Reservoir Road just after 10 a.m. According to police, Dingle, owner of Natural Way Design and Landscaping, was working in a tree with all of the rigging attached. Police say Dingle and his employee removed the top 15 – 20 feet of the tree; it went as planned. After removing the top of the tree, however, the trunk uprooted, according to police. Two drivers transported to shock trauma after weekend collision on Route 32 in Savage.
Two drivers were seriously injured in a head-on collision Saturday night in the eastbound lane of Route 32. A 2004 Toyota Scion was heading the wrong way on Route 32 west of Route 1 in Savage when it collided with a 1999 Toyota Camry. Both drivers were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The driver of the Scion, Jose I. Romero, 34, of Baltimore, was listed in serious but stable condition at shock trauma. The 27-year-old driver of the Camry, Regan A. Murphy, of New York City, is also in serious but stable condition, said police. Neither car had passengers, according to police. A Sykesville teen pulled from a burning car by a Howard County police officer Friday has been released from Shock Trauma, according to the Howard County Times. Casey Marie Bellofatto, 18, was rescued from the burning car by Cpl. Craig Ream, an 11-year veteran of the Howard County Police Department. Ream was on his way to work on Rt. 97 in Carroll County when he came upon the two-vehicle accident at 3 a.m. on Jan. 11. As previously reported on Patch, Ream crawled under the hood of Bellofatto's burning Toyota Corolla and squeezed himself through a small opening to pull the teenager to safety. OUTSIDE BALTIMORE, MD -- A local police officer crawled under the hood of a burning car and squeezed himself through a small opening to pull a teenage woman from a wreck early Friday morning, according to police. The 18-year-old driver involved in a collision while leaving Mt. Hebron High School on Jan. 3 has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, according to Explore Howard. Jeffrey Sinclair, 18, of Ellicott City, was leaving a Mt. Hebron parking lot after school on Thursday, Jan. 3, with four passengers in a Honda Civic. Police say Sinclair drove onto Route 99 in front of a Mack truck. The other four passengers in the vehicle were not seriously injured. A truck overturned on the Interstate 95 exit to MD 32 on Tuesday morning in Savage, injuring the driver. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital, but the extent of the drivers' injuries were unknown, according to a state police spokesperson. The spokesperson did not know why the truck overturned or what contents the truck was carrying. Around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon police and highway officials had turned the truck back up on its wheels and were clearing the shoulder of large boxes. Howard County Fire and Rescue Services first responded to the incident around 11 a.m. The Route 32 exit was open around 12:30 p.m., with police directing traffic around the incident. School officials say the high school student was near her bus stop.
A Mt. Hebron High School student was taken to the hospital Friday morning after being hit by a car, according to school officials. According to an email sent by the Howard County Public School System, the student was near her bus stop. Howard County Police say a 15-year-old girl was running across Town and Country Boulevard near West Springs Drive at about 6:55 a.m. when she was hit by a car. The girl was taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries, according to police, and has been released. Police say the preliminary investigation does not indicate any fault on the part of the driver; no charges have been filed. Students at Mt.
