Howard County had a mostly peaceful 4th of July.
Howard County Police reported they made four DUI arrests on Wednesday, the 4th of July, and that no one was arrested at the Columbia Lakefront celebration. It was a noticeable turn from last year's festivities when 18 people were arrested for DUI over the 4th of July weekend and a juvenile was arrested after a fight broke out at the lakefront. About 20,000 to 25,000 people attended this year's celebration at the Lakefront, according to Phil Bryan, superintendent of recreation activities for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. That number is less than the 30,000 to 50,000 that were expected to attend. Bryan wrote in an email that the low turnout may have been the result of the heat and threatening inclement weather. …
What did you think of the fireworks show put on by Howard County at the Columbia Lakefront?
Despite thunderstorm threats and sweltering heat, the 4th of July fireworks show at the Columbia Lakefront took place without a hitch. The finale, as seen in the video above, was a rousing display coordinated to Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. YouTube user stepwise69 shot the video from a nice spot at the Lakefront and uploaded it on Thursday. In the video, you can hear the fireworks going off in place of the cannon sounds that are typically used for the 1812 Overture and the loud screams of the crowd as the finale comes to an end. The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks estimated between 20,000 and 25,000 people attended the 4th of July festivities at the Lakefront. The total cost of the event to the county was $41,150, which …

Officers will check for alcohol, seatbelt compliance and use of child safety seats.
The Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, but the Howard County Police Department is ready for early celebrations. In addition to ramping up patrols on July 4, police will set up a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county during the weekend, police said in a statement Thursday. Police will be in marked and unmarked vehicles in a setting with lights and signage. While the department did not say where the checkpoint would be, it did say what officers will be looking for: The checkpoint is partially funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office and falls under the Checkpoint Strikeforce, a multi-state initiative to take impaired drivers off the roads. In Howard County, alcohol was involved in 25 percent of fatal …
