Man Shot and Killed Early Thursday Morning in Columbia

Police are investigating the third homicide in less than two weeks in Howard County.

A man was killed after being shot multiple times in the 5200 block of Brook Way, near the Route 29 interchange in Town Center, early Thursday morning in Columbia. Omar Oliver, 39, was found dead at the scene at about 1:30 a.m. , according to police. Police said they received a 911 call from a family member of Oliver's, who reported hearing arguing and then gun shots outside of his apartment. Another family member ran outside after the shooting and attempted CPR until paramedics arrived, but Oliver died in a grassy area near the Berkshires apartment building, according to police. Detectives do not have a suspect or a motive at this time, said police. A traffic stop related to the homicide investigation was made last night around 2:30 a.m. …

Howard County's Top Cops Receive Awards for Work

The medal of honor was awarded to Cpl. Craig Ream who on his way to serve a warrant when he pulled a woman from a burning vehicle.

Three of Howard County's finest were honored with awards at Wednesday night's police award ceremony. Medal of Honor Cpl. Craig Ream, an 11-year veteran of the force, received the Medal of Honor for his harrowing rescue of a young woman who was trapped inside a burning vehicle on the side of Route 97 in Carroll County. At the time, Ream was on his way to serve a search warrant, but when he saw the vehicle, he stopped and along with a Carroll County Sherriff's deputy, was able to extricate the woman from the car. She was later flown to Shock Trauma and is still in the hospital, but is alive. Ream suffered burns, cuts and scrapes, but wasn't seriously injured during the rescue on Jan. 11. River Hill Grad Named NCAA Defensive Player of the Year

Tommy Brenton, a 2007 graduate of River Hill High School, received the award for his stellar defensive work with the Stony Brook Seawolves.

  The top defensive player in Division 1 NCAA basketball for the 2012 - 2013 season was Tommy Brenton, a 2007 River Hill High School graduate. Earlier this month, Brenton's coach at Stony Brook University (NY), Steve Pikiell accepted the Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year award for Brenton in Atlanta, according to Newsday.com. "Usually, these awards go to players from high majors," said Pikiell to Newsday. "I'm excited and thrilled they recognized what a great player Tommy has been. It's unbelievable. He's in select company. Usually, these awards go to first-round picks." In fact, last year Kentucky's 6-11 center Anthony Davs was the defensive player of the year. Cicadas Return: 17-year Cicadas to Overtake East Coast by the Millions

In May, cicadas in Maryland and along the Eastern seaboard will wake from their 17-year sleep.

Marylanders can expect to see Magicicada Brood II cicadas starting in May and June, according to cicada researchers.   There have been cicadas in Maryland over the past 17 years, most recently Brood X in 2004. According to magicicada.org, a website run by University of Connecticut entomologist John Cooley, these periodical cicadas are unique in their life cycles (13 or 17 years), their mass emergence and their well-known chorus.  This particular group of cicadas, named Brood II, will appear from Connecticut to Virginia, according to the website. This brood is not as large, in geographic appearance, as Brood X which last appeared in Howard County in 2004, according to the Magicicicada database.  Here are some more interesting facts about …

Here's the week's forecast, courtesy of the National Weather Service.

Expect mild temperatures all week – and you may want to keep an umbrella handy. According to the National Weather Service, we can expect scattered sprinkles Monday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Otherwise, skies will be partly sunny and temperatures will reach about 60 degrees, dropping to the low-30s at night.  Tuesday should be sunny with temperatures in the high-40s during the day, dropping to about 30 degrees at night. More sun Wednesday, and temperatures should reach the low-50s during the day, dropping to the high -20s at night. Thursday should also be sunny, with temperatures in the low-50s during the day. Police: Odenton Man Arrested after Robbery near Columbia Mall

Police are looking for two other men who may have been involved in the alleged robbery.

  Three men were attacked by three other men and one wallet was stolen near the entrance to the Mall in Columbia after an altercation early Saturday morning, reported police. Police said three men were outside of Union Jack's near the mall's entrance around 2:30 a.m., when three others approached and demanded their wallets. The men that approached punched all three men after they refused to give up their wallets. Police said the men who were attacked were not seriously injured and did not require medical treatment. During the altercation, the alleged robbers stole one of the men's wallets, before the men were able to flee, according to police.
