I'll Have Another Wins Another—at Preakness

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.

I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey.  “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse.  From day one, I’ve believed in him.  I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

Weigh In On Orioles vs. Nationals

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.

The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

WATCH: Columbia's Zach Brown Selected 52nd Overall in NFL Draft

The Tennessee Titans selected the former Wilde Lake star with the 52nd pick of the NFL Draft.

Zach Brown was drafted by the Tennessee Titans 52nd overall in the NFL Draft on Friday night.  He was surrounded by friends and family at the Greene Turtle in Columbia. When his name was announced, the bar erupted into cheers and applause. Brown started to cry. "I said I wasn't going to cry," said Brown, who will play linebacker for the Titans, "But everybody cries." Shortly before Brown's name was announced, he received a phone call from the Titans and he broke into a smile and began to hug his friends. "It's a special moment to share it with them," said Brown, but he understood the work ahead of him. "Now it's time to get going," said Brown, "to play a career, not a season." As for Columbia and Wilde Lake, he said, "This is where it …

New $6 Million Clubhouse Coming to Hobbit's Glen

"The new clubhouse will not only serve the golfing community..." —Phillip Nelson, Columbia Association president

The Columbia Association board approved a $5.85 million clubhouse for Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club at its meeting Thursday. In addition, board members opted to build a new turn house, or restroom cabana, which is an additional $250,000. "I think this will be a great project for the community," said CA President Phillip Nelson. "The new clubhouse will not only serve the golfing community, but the preliminary designs that were presented by the H. Chambers architectural firm also presented a place for neighborhood and community functions." Preliminary designs from H. Chambers depicted a main level that included men's and women's locker rooms, a large dining room and bar area, and increased patio space. The lower level will house a cart barn and …

What is utterly preposterous about the whole thing is the lack of any improvements to the clubhouse at sister course Fairway Hills. With a 300 sq ft indoor golfshop/lounge area, Fairway Hills continues to be treated like the red headed stepchild. Considering the FH clubhouse is 3-4 stories high, you'd think *something* could be done there.   more ›

WATCH: Have YOU Ever Stolen a Gym Towel?

The Columbia Association's towel expenses have made front page news.

The issue of towel theft in Columbia is back on the forefront of local conversation after the Wall Street Journal included the CA’s $500,000-a-year costs to replace and maintain towels in a national story about "terry-cloth bandits." It costs between $50,000 and $60,000 to replace the towels, which are provided at CA-operated gyms, CA officials said. The rest of the towel maintenance money is spent on washing, drying, folding and bleaching them, officials said.

Why would anyone want to take a gym towel? They are not high quality designer towels that one would be overcome with the temptation to own. If people can afford the gym membership, I think they can afford to buy their own towels at home. This makes no sense.   more ›

Bicyclists Unite! Call to Action in Columbia, Across America

Jennifer Toole, a professional bike and pedestrian planner, spoke to Columbia residents about the future of biking in Columbia.

Almost 80 people showed up at the Slayton House at the Wilde Lake Village Center on Wednesday to hear about a healthy, green and relatively inexpensive mode of transportation in Howard County. It wasn't hybrid or electric vehicles that they discussed, or even a new ergonomic bus. They learned about biking in Columbia. Jennifer Toole, an expert bicycle and pedestrian planner, spoke to the crowd, which included aficionados from veteran bikers to the occasional spin cyclist, on Columbia's needs as bike usage nationwide grows. "It's wonderful for us to have this kind of expertise in our community," said Jane Dembner, organizer of the Columbia Association's Community Building Speakers' Series. "[Toole] is helping us make our pathway standards…

Columbia's Brown Expected To Be Second Round NFL Draft Pick

NFL Draft experts predict the exceptionally athletic Wilde Lake High grad to be in the top 50 selected.

Former Wilde Lake star running back Zach Brown is expected to be drafted in the second or third round of the NFL draft this week, according to draft experts. CBS’s Pat Kirwan and NFL Network’s Charley Casserly predicted Brown would be selected in the second round, 46th overall, by the Philadelphia Eagles. But Russ Lande, from Sporting News, predicted Brown at 75th overall in the third round to the Houston Texans. Weigh in: How Much Do You Like Your Gym Towel?

Enough to steal it? The CA’s towel problem made the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

Here’s a little-known fact: The Columbia Association spends about $500,000 a year on towel-related expenses at its three fitness centers, according to the Wall Street Journal. We're not saying you would steal your gym towel. At least not on purpose. But a front-page Journal story Tuesday reported that gyms across the country, including those in Columbia, are experiencing towel theft problems. The Columbia Association-run gyms are: The Columbia Athletic Club, Columbia Gym and Supreme Sports Club. The Columbia Association has tried to eliminate towels from its gyms twice, the Journal reported, but canceled the idea after member backlash.

I bring my own towel... simply because the towels supplied are barely large enough and from the CONSTANT washing and mandatory bleaching, degrade quickly. Not to mention, when I use my own towel, I KNOW who used it last.. just me. Yes, i have walked out with a towel before, but I have ALWAYS brought them back. But, people steal things out of lockers, so that just goes to show you.. people of all …   more ›

Face Behind the Voice: Meet Orioles' New Announcer

The Orioles open 2012 with their third public address announcer since 1974.

Ryan Wagner watched the first round of the Masters from his computer Thursday afternoon, briefly interjecting cheers for Tiger Woods during a phone call. "Come on, Tiger!," Wagner yelled occasionally. In many ways, his actions on the eve of his first day at a new job are indicative of the reasons why he landed the gig—his passion for sports and his effervescent personality. Opening Day is here in Baltimore, and when 3:05 p.m. rolls around, it will mean more to Wagner than an Orioles game against Minnesota (TV: MASN, WJZ; Radio: 1090 AM).  Wagner—a Baltimore native and a 2003 graduate of Edgewood High School—is the new voice of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a job he earned ahead of a group of hundreds of hopefuls during a tryout period in …
