Veteran's Lunch, Concerts and More: Weekend Events in Howard County

Patch's weekly listing of weekend events features an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for $7, a fall hike on the Patapsco River, and classical concerts.

Saturday


All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast: The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City hosts their 12th annual fall county breakfast at Bethany United Methodist Church (2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday. Breakfast items include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits, coffee and juice. The price is $7 for adults, and kids under 8 eat free.

Hike the River - The Colors of Fall: Woody Merkle and John Cookson of the Howard County Conservancy will take hikers on hilly woodland terrain to see fall foliage. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the HCC (10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock) and the hike takes about two to three hours round trip. The hike is described as "moderate difficulty."

Your Health and Our Changing Climate: This free forum will feature a discussion of how climate change affects health. Speakers include Dr. Cindy Parker and Dr. Steve Shapiro from Johns Hopkins University who are the authors of "Climate Chaos: Your Health at Risk; What You Can Do to Protect Yourself and Your Family." The event takes place at the Health Sciences Building at Howard Community College (10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia) at 9 a.m.

Holiday Vendor Extravaganza: Over 30 vendors have signed up to sell their wares and crafts at the Ridgely Run Community Center (8400 Mission Road, Jessup). The sales start at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. A free continental breakfast will be available.

Third Annual Thanksgiving Dash Thru the Path: Longfellow Elementary School invites the community come out to the school at 9:30 a.m. for a two kilometer run/ walk along Hesperus Drive and the area bike path. The event is designed to promote wellness and gather the community. The cost is $1 and a non-perishable food donation. All children finishers will receive a medal. Longfellow Elementary is located at 5470 Hesperus Drive in Columbia.

Artfully Wilde at Slayton House: This 'gather of gifts' at Wilde Lake's Slayton House (10400 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia) features a traditional craft show and a fine craft gallery. A reception will be held on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and the Saturday fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Watershed Cleanup Near Old Simkins Mill: Volunteers will clean up litter in Patapsco State Park along Ilchester Road and River Road in Ellicott City. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will run until 1 p.m. It's being coordinated by the Patapsco Heritage Greenway in partnership with Agape Mission Church. Volunteers can register here.

U.S. Naval Acadamy Band Chamber Winds Concert - The Naval Academy Band's Chamber Winds perform at Historic Oakland (5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia) starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Chamber Winds will perform music from the classical to the modern era. This event is free to the public.

The Howard County Concert Orchestra Presents 'Bach and the Brits': The orchestra will perform Brandeburg Concerto No. 4 in G, Finzi: Romance in Eb, and Delius: La Calinda from Koanga at the concert that begins at 4 p.m. Sunday. The event is $25 for adults and $12 for students with an ID, free to children under 17. The concert is at St. John's Episcopal Church (9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City)

Veteran's Day Lunch at Ellicott Mills Brewing: Howard County Marine Corps League Detachment 1084 is inviting vets and non-vets to come out to celebrate Veteran's Day at Ellicott Mills Breing Co. on Main Street (8308 Main, Ellicott City). Veterans eat free and the cost for non-vets is $10. The lunch begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m.
