Volunteers Help Hundreds Have a Happy Thanksgiving

Area volunteers packed and distributed turkeys and other Thanksgiving Day staples to needy families in Howard County.

Six hundred families who might not have had a holiday dinner this year enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings, courtesy of some dedicated volunteers.

Two days before Thanksgiving, hundreds lined up outside in Columbia to receive boxes and bags filled with food.

The event was organized by Howard County Community Action Council (CAC) with the help of dozens of volunteers from throughout the community and many local business sponsors.

CAC President Bita Dayhoff said the event originally helped 125 needy families when it began seven years ago. She said this year, thanks largely to the additional food provided by Food for Tomorrow, the group will provide a holiday feast for 600 families.

Each family received a turkey, fresh produce, canned vegetables and packaged foods like macaroni and cheese.

Dayhoff said CAC group purchased food from the Maryland Food Bank and local grocers.

About 100 volunteers helped distribute turkeys and bags of food neighbors in need.
