4th of July Fireworks and Family Fun this Weekend in Howard County

Here are some fun things to do around town with the family this weekend and a link to local firework demonstrations to check out for Independence Day.


Where/When:   Columbia Association, 10221 Wincopin Cir Ste 100, Columbia, MD, Friday, June 29, 2012, 6:30 p.m.

Why to go:  The Columbia Association's Lakefront Summer Festival is sponsored by the Columbia Association and held on the lawn at the Columbia Town Center Lakefront off Little Patuxent Pkwy. No admission fee is charged. Parking is free.

Sunday concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. and all other concerts begin at 8 p.m. and end by 10 p.m.

Every Friday there will be free dance instruction with music will be held under the People Tree at Town Center Lakefront, from 6:30-8 p.m. When the dance session ends — the movie begins!

Movies begin at dusk (about 8:30 p.m.) All films are rated (G) unless otherwise noted.

No glass containers or alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Why to go:  A 16-day multidisciplinary outdoor/indoor summer arts festival comprised of both ticketed and free events.

Where/When:   Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Pkwy, Columbia, MD, Friday, June 29, 2012, 8 p.m.

Why to go:  Canadian writer/performer Charles Ross returns following last year’s uproarious “One-Man Star Wars Trilogy” – this time for an energetic romp through the enchanting world of Middle-earth.  Armed with nothing more than elbow pads and his outrageous imagination, Ross recreates booming special effects, riveting stage fights and harrowing rescues as he journeys through the trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King in 3600 seconds of unbelievable kinetic entertainment!

Stay for a post-performance Meet & Greet with Charles Ross.

Performances are subject to change based on tour schedules or other reasons beyond the control of the Columbia Festival of the Arts.

Why to go:  County Executive Ken Ulman Invites you to the Columbia Lakefront for an Evening of Family Fun and Fireworks!

*Note:  Little Patuxent Parkway will be closed at approximately 7 p.m. and will not be reopened until the conclusion of the fireworks.


Where/When:   1030 Leslie Ave, Catonsville, MD, 8 weeks sessions for Thursday or Friday evening 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Why to go:  Beginner fencing classes are now forming. Ages 8 - 80.

We provide the equipment and weapons.

You come in comfortable gym clothes and good tennis or cross-training shoes.

Can be a great experience for the family. And we offer family discounts!

Why to go:  Buy everything from clothing to fowl at this outdoor-indoor flea market.

Where/When:   Rouse Theater, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia, MD 21044, 8 p.m.

Why to go:  BOTANIC features an eclectic score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi and reveals nature’s changing imagery. This production shows off the endlessly renewable energy of the superb MOMIX performers, with costumes, projections and custom-made props and puppetry adding an extra dose of fantasy to the elixir. This is dance at its most organic and inventive.

Why to go:  School is ending in June... but Abrakadoodle Art doesn't have to!  Children are immersed in art vocabulary, artists, styles and art history while creating their own art piece each class.  Comprehensive art medium includes painting, watercolor, sculpture, drawing, college.
